ESS Breeders

Recommended Posts

I am looking into a springer pup for working and only at the beginning of research.

Can any one tell me of any breeders that they have used or had good reports about.

I am looking for KC etc.

I am in Nottingham and willing to travel to spend time with the breeders and their dogs etc.

I have had a quick look through posts on PW but nothing jumped out and bit.

Thank you in advance.

try Tim Crothers in Northern Ireland, his Birdrowe Kennels are renowned all over the UK & Ireland, his dog Saxon of Birdrowe is the father of last years British Field Trails champion.

Hi i'm not sure why you are looking for mainstream breeders.Goggle UK Gundogs and 6 or seven sites come up.Plenty of great bred dogs come up for sale.Even the above breeders use these sites.Always some good stuff for sale even FTCH X FTCH pups.Hope this might help you. :good:

I am looking at everything i can at the moment.

As said right at beginning of research and i know that recommendation goes a long way and of course

i value other members experience and knowledge.

i want to get the right dog for the job whose temperament and working stile fits me and the job.

Oh and don't forget i have got a Gurt who is just as much a part of the deal as me.

I appreciate all replies so far and advice given.

Thank you.

Hi mate, there is a good breeder In my village which is an hour and a quarter from nottm (I am from nottm originally) they breed working cockers and springer and they trial them as well. My cocker pup is from there.

They have a litter of springers due in a few weeks time.

What is your temperament and what job is the dog to perform for you?

I would say that I am quite relaxed, focused on the job in hand but still know how to enjoy life.

I want the dog to flush and retrieve in varying amounts. I help keep on a local shoot so have vermin control to do, I will beat obviously in the season

but I will also be knocking the pigeons at the right times of the year.

Hi HB

I would just go and buy a dog from good working parents and put some work into it,the more you put in the more you will get out of the dog

Geordie

I would tend to agree, researching the top kennels will take you in the direction of the fastest, hardest hunting dogs in the country. Tremendous animals if that is what you are after, but it doesn't sounds like it is?

Geordie and WGD, i appreciate what you are saying.

A nice steady, reliable dog is what i want, not a show winner etc.

My biggest fear that i end up buying with the heart not my head. Already done that once albeit we got away with it and have a brilliant lap rat (for the gaffer of course)

Cheers

Would agree with the last 2 posts, buying a pup from a trialing kennel can work out well if you get a pup thats on the soft side, but if you get something hot you may struggle to get the best from the dog. I know from experience, i got a lab from a proven trial line as my first dog and i struggled with him, as he was just too hot for a first timer!!

  • 2 months later...

After all the good advice from all PW members and talking with loads of other ess owners we finally found what i hope will be the right girl.

Picked Lolly up from a breeder in Wakefield.

The dam is from Andrew Whitehorse and a beautiful girl she is calm and on the spot.

My little girl is hopefully going to turn out similar. I am well chuffed.

Any way, cuddly bits out of the way.

What advice can any one offer for me to do the best for Lolly?

She is 9 weeks old and full of it. She will recall quite well so far and will bring bits of stuff to me of her own accord.

Many thanks so far.

Do you mean the dam came from Andy Whitehouse (i.e. 2012 Spaniel Champs winner)? Who was the stud dog?

Best of luck with your new pup, get a DVD - by far the best way to learn, apart from one to one lessons. David Lisett's series is excellent (Buccleuch Gundogs), as is Simon Tyers (Hawcroft Gundogs) and one which I have not seen but is very good on early training is Adrian & Caroline Slater's DVD (Kipperridge Gundogs).

Yes mate i do mean Andy and after correction by the gaffer it was his stud dog - Buzz Lightning.
