Salop Matt
I prefer to shoot a semi auto or pump every day of the week over an over and under or side by side ! When i said this to the other halfs dad who`s a shooting man to he couldnt understand it and himself hates semi`s and pumps. He than asked me why it was i felt that way about the Semi`s and pumps and what it was about them that i liked and it got me thinking, after a while i realised i couldnt "justifie" why, i just simply do, i feel more natural with one they feel mor comfortable and more shootable/pointable but i still couldnt put my finger on why. So is there anyone else out there whos preference is for a semi-auto or pump over the other 2 ? And if so why do you prefer them ?
Guest cookoff013
i use a pump because i can abuse it. but in reality i hate shooting with it. compared to my mk70sprt it is awful. too long, and the ballence isnt there. cant say i`ve used a auto exclusively enough to like or hate them. jackinbox99
Yes and no. I started off with my beretta 391 semi back in the day and liked it because it felt lighter than an o/u. I found i could get on targets quicker with it. Since then ive had several o/u`s and just cant get on with them at all, no matter how much I try. I thought id never get on with anything other than a semi, but last year bought a cheapie spanish sbs and I love it. Its light, and I find i seem to get on targets quicker than I do with my semi. Not sure what it is about it, but I love it. So now, if i go out, its a toss up between the semi or the sbs. Cant really get on with pumps mind you. I seem to forget to pump at the crucial moment. doh!
chrispti
I do like autos, but I shoot better with an O/U.
oscarsdad
I shoot much better with my maxus, but I think that it more to do with the fact that being synthetic stock means I hav add or remove cast/spacers etc so it fits me perfectly. mickmep
pretty much exclusively shot semi auto's, shoot 99% clays. was talked into buying a o/u but just dont get on with them as well. also decided i needed a sxs, which had about 10 shots through it before it was retired my shooting mate has used that one more than i have. as has been posted above the way you can alter stock drop with shims is a big plus for me, means you can have a play and get them shooting where you like. use a pump action for occasional rough shooting, dont have a problem switching between the two. Cosd
In the hide semis are much simpler and quicker to load, no getting tangled in the net like an o/u when you have to break it. And the third shot comes in handy on busy days. I don't do much clays but guess it just comes down to preference, can't see an advantage or disadvantage on clays. vulpicide
Hi I've used a semi for almost 40 years for foxes rabbits and pigeons it was a five shot before hungerford now its a three shot :yp:

timps
that's just an adjustable stock, Not exclusive to semi's but something I don't get is why they don't do the same with OU? Cost reasons, you would have to make all OU detachable triggers or use a side plate because the stock covers the action and once removed gives access to the trigger group. If the whole stock moved up or down like a semi auto it would have to be oversized at the action to accommodate the movement (causing further problems) or it would leave the trigger group exposed when set at its extremities. EdSolomons
Nice and soft to shoot but not the same as a good O/U in my eyes. Always far too light to shoot clays consistently straight out the box, Ive got an old 32" 391 and Ill be putting 1lb+ of weight on it for the Benelli shoot this Sunday... Yoggy
For me personally I use an O/U for walking up game and use a Semi when either in a hide or Wildfowling. Horses for courses really.
Big Marty
Have to say really don't like semi Autos or pumps, had a semi Auto few years ago and I know it was just me but couldn't get comfortable with it at all. I seemed to be getting above every bird and no matter what I did couldn't put it right. As I said I know it was nothing to do with the gun it was all me. Just prefer O/U always have and always will. Shropshire_Lad
A shotgun is a very personal thing, a rifle you can get good results quickly if its accurate, a shotgun has to feel right. You shoot very well with your semi auto, future father in law shoots very, very well with an o/u . All about what you are confident with, as a walk about gun I love my 25"sxs but have shot my best with an o/u. atvb Paul.
RossEM
Target acquisition is very quick with a semi auto, I just can't get used to the recoil. It feels odd. Best semi auto I've shot was a Fabarm H38, which was really well balanced and didn't have the requisite railway sleeper sized fore end.
