Ferretboy111
Just a quick poll to see how far people have managed to shoot and hit their intended quarry with this .17 hmr round, mine is 125yrds grouping at a target, and for 100yrds at a rabbit. Alex I under estimate its distance.
Graham M
I seem to remember a young man on here who had some friends who were (supposedly ) taking foxes at 250yds with one. G.M.

shooterash
My best shot was 200 yards, checked with my leopold rx1 rangefinder  but most of my shots are around 100 to 180 yards, the hmr is a very flat shot so you dont need to give any guess work, where the crosshair is,thats were it will hit Cheers Ash

Dead-Eyed Duck
I must be doing something wrong here? The 0.17 hmr zeroed at 100 yards drops almost 10" at 200 yards. The best groups (benchrest) that I have heard of are invariably 0.75" at 100yards, and these were in near perfect conditions of no wind. This is roughly what I can achieve with mine. With such a light bullet the energy at long range must show a massive reduction, and hence the 'killing effect' is drastically reduced. I've been limiting my hmr to headshots at rabbits at 125 yards max. Would someone with lots of hmr experience please clear this matter up, as under normal shooting conditions I wouldn't dream of shooting anything with mine at 200 yards. Have I been reading the wrong articles please? Don

deadeye ive
The topic indictates the furthest one off shot and not what can consistantly be achieved .........Honest responses would yield two very different answers . Ferretboy111
Ive zeroed mine in at 100yrds, anything at 60 below i have to aim a half mil dot below, and my furthest shots at 125yrds was flat. On varmint Al's .17hmr page he has made graphs etc showing the drop and its like 10 inches at 200yards with 17grn, he said he has taken ground squirrels beyond 200yrds with it. 1350fps at 200yrds with 17grn v max with 2550fps output, so same as a .22? AndyCM
Rabbits, 140 - 150 yards head shots Crow, 140 yards I believe the calibre, and others are capable of further, but those distances are enough for me. - I don't use a range finder - shots taken with no wind - using a bipod - lots of targets first (groups at 200 were not to my liking so I reeled in a bit) The rabbits & crow died ! Happy hunting AndyCM
Highlander
Personally I take all claims for long shot kills with a (big) pinch of salt. IMO long distance shooting should be saved for the range and not used when live quarry shooting. What ever happened to good ol' fieldcraft to get you well within killing range to say nothing of the safety aspect?

Good look Ash Is that right  If you zero at 50 it will still shoot flat at 100 yards at 175 it will be @4" drop This shows it well if it works I can happily if its still hit a stella can at 200 yards and can say if its full (of water of course) then it is still impressive. I've shot rabbits and rooks to 175 but body shots. If its windy forget it.
badsworth
Crow 210 yards (we were both rather surprised!) Fox 183 yards (and boy haven't I heard all about it on this forum). The fox was completely static listening for mice. I was prone using a bi-pod with all the time in the world. My Savage is zeroed in at 100 yards and I use a Leica Rangemaster 900. I use Premier Accutip - but only because it is so accurate. Other ounds might be even better. If it is windy stay at home! B
Ferretboy111
Cheers guys Alex Gotta get more confident with shooting anything further than 100yrds firstly, not that many rabbits sit that far away.
al4x
you'd be surprised how many rabits sit out there! Get it on a bi-pod and just practice. With ref to the 183 yard fox I'm not actually surprised personally I think the round has the power at that range its just putting it in the right place if you can then its still retaining a lot of power
Ferretboy111
Got a bipod i crafted which works ok, couldnt shoot without it very easily. Need to get a different scope i think for it, 12* mag is ok but id prefer 24* so its easier to place the shot. Alex Nearly everything down my end has been cut, so bring on the rabbiting. al4x
Mine goes to 16X but it definitely makes the longer stuff easier.
AndyCM
Mmmm, good point about scopes guys. My .17hmr has a 6-24 x 42 and to wind it up to 20x and higher is great for the long range shots, it's mildot too which makes any small adjustments easy. From 25 to 125 yards I aim on though. Cheers AndyCM
Dougy
135yds range finder. head shot rabbit. i would very much like to see somebody with a HMR shooting CONSISTANT 2inch 5 shot groups at 200 yds.thats giving a 1/4 of an inch more target than the reccomended 1 3/4 inch average size of a rabbits head side on ! Maybe it could be something for next years meet at Bisley have a wager on it to make it interesting Not saying it cant be done but probably, like many others i would like to see it
