MG6065
what are your thoughts on using the cheapest of the cheapest clay carts for close range ratting. yes i could use the 410 but what would be wrong in using very cheap clay carts for rats that are 10 yards away? surely the pattens and power would be sufficient to swich their lights off? what is the cheapest you can pick say 50 clay carts for? thoughts very much welcomed! worthy130
if you are happy to do it then do it. This will only cause an argument on here!
alendil
i did shoot some rats with clay loads and was good to stop them. and only cost 3.80 a box
Cranfield
.410 loads range from 9gms (fourten) to 18gms (magnum), so I can't see anything wrong with using either 21gms, or 24 gms "clay loads" for rats. I would use a tight choke though.
Thunderbird
If people use clay loads for pigeons at 30 yards (and they do) I don't see what they wouldn't use them for rat loads. Is it indoors tho?
MG6065
In and out, mostly out, how much do they cost?
Thunderbird
Cheapest about £150 a 1000. 12 gauge.

At ten yards i wouldn't worry what choke you have good luck finding the rat afterwords though Buying 50 at a time is not going to get you any discount so you will be looking at about 4.80 a box round here
EdSolomons
You will vapourise them. Less than 20 yards you will be picking bits up. But will get the job done!

aister
when i am shooting rabbits with the shotgun i use clay loads, 28gram 7 1/2. keep them fine and close with a tight choke, mayby half choke at no more than 25 yards, works fine for me. littlerob
well most 28g size 7.5 clay loads cot around 3.60 to 3.90 a box and i have droped rabbits at 20 to 28 yards half choke have seen eley first 21g clay load for 3.35 a box or a 21g clay steel load for 3.
Beretta28g
I use a steel clay load on close range ducks. Sometimes on decoyed pigeon too. You will be fine.
bedwards1966
At that range any clay load and choke will be fine. I've shot squirrels, which can be very tough, with great success using 28g 7 1/2 carts. Typically I'd expect to pay between £3.80 and £4 per 25. Cheaper than .410 ammo, and with the larger pattern easier to hit them.
apache
Please don't use steel if shooting onto a hard surface!
libs
Go for it, rat shooting with any gun is great fun. As mentioned earlier any shotgun load ~20 yards will cut a rat in half. Bring a shovel.

lister1
At that sort of distance I'd use my .
