Whats the point of working sometimes

People don't always have children when they can't afford it. Often they already have a family when they fall on hard times.

When my son was born I was in the middle of my best ever turnover year, but thanks to the credit crunch and recession within 12 months it was my worst ever.

Can happen to anyone any time.

I fully understand and appreciate that (I'd imagine it probably happens that way more often than not). But regardless, in this case, the baby is there now... So get responsible and take whatever sacrifices are needed.

I'm not trying to sound callus or in any way, holier-than-yow. But some people's morals, ethics, sense of responsibility and overall chip-on-shoulder attitude really bug me (not you chimp, but it seems our generation in general).

I think its a sad society when people who decide to start a family and then winge that they cant afford to keep them and expect tax payers to help support there kids,i am self employed if i dont work i dont earn,i just get on with it.

Its a sad society when people have kids in order to guarantee themselves a roof over their head and benefits for the rest of their lives. But thats what thousands do.

Slot for Shotguns so if you are selling please let me know.

Now I'm a very firm believer in "I earn the money so I'll spend the money". I think everybody should have a hobby and have a getaway from the daily toils of life. But when you have commitments, you drop these hobbies and become frugal and do what you can - surely Shirley?!? How many nursery sessions could you get if you sold that lot and cut back on shooting!?!

Again, I really think you're a nice guy so don't take it really personally. I'd have said the same to whoever the OP was.

Xxx

Point taken and well made fella BUT

Fishing---knocked the two sydis on the head when we moved it together and knew the little one was coming..use to be a tackle tart but not anymore..hardly ever go carping due to the overall cost of bait ticket etc ..now stick to free waters or cheap day tickets..if I get offer overtime more likley to do that than fishing

Marlin 917VS, Custom .17HMR, DM80 Mod, MTC Viper 4-16x50..Paid out of car claim..rest went into saving and paying off bills

Breda 12G O/U Double Trigger non E/J shotgun--Gone to a better home..got it FOC from Bakerboy to get me started

Benelli 12G 0/U Single Trigger E/J shotgun..£150 special from a mate

Browning B2000 S/A 12G shotgun--FOC

Hatsan Escort Magnum S/A 12G Saved up for 4 months with overtime and got it second hand

BASC Member...rather go without beer than this!!

Its taken me nearly 3 years to build that up and would not add to it now..and if you remember I put a thread a bit ago about selling some fishing ad shooting gear to help us through when I had the time off work due to the eye ops

just to add though, why you thought it necessary to post it up on here is beyond me, you must have expected some flack, hope you get it sorted though can you appeal?

oh come on Gram you know I am more thick skinned than that :good:

It was more t point towards the fact that benefits are given to the wrong people and wrong amount

My son works off shore and his average monthly tax deductions are £2000. You should speak to him about people on benefits . I worked all my life and accrued a works pension and old age pension and I am still getting screwed for tax . Sorry not to much sympathy from me .

Harnser .

Then, Harnser, your sons a very lucky boy paying more in tax than a lot on here will gross each month !!!

Petrol is the killer for me. Over £100 a week when I secure a full weeks work, 50-80 hours when I can get it. keeping the thing on the road, maintenance, tax and insurance is abominable. That, a serious cut in wages and jobs being further away, I am looking at Tax Credits myself and it looks like I qualify.

Maybe then I can have a dog again, and a Holiday, drink more and take up smoking.

Which is obviously what tax credits are for :hmm::no:

But in fairness he is most likely working an 84 hour week like a lot of offshore workers (the persons on ad-hoc contracts) not the rotations.

I think it's more a case of living within your means. Don't get me wrong, I've been down the wrong road plenty of times. But now I've paid back everything I owed (muchos muchos money), if I want something...I work for it. As chimp has done it seems...so I say again, fair play. But, If I found myself in a position where I needed more funds...on eBay I will go!

We've gone off track...possibly due to me. I'm clearly more pee'd off with somebody (close to me but not on here) than I thought and probably vented.

In answer to the original post - yes, the benefits system does sound a bit screwy if that's how it works. But I guess it's not much different than income tax. The more you work, the more you pay.

For the record, I don't have a particularly great job and don't get paid an extraordinary amount. However, I live within my means and pay what needs paying and just get on with it. If I want to do something, I save before I spend. I don't live on the never never plastic money (after paying off a hefty sum over 5 years). In fact, within the past few months I've had to sell stuff to fund my habits, sorry, hobbies!

so many good replys matt , but i agree with gram , its a bit of a daft thing to put on here with out flack .

but to be honest i hate the benefits system as it is , dead against all easy hand outs personally . im a bit older (not a lot) than you and remember the family way of life in the 70's . if we didnt have it its because my parents couldnt pay for it in full , simples .

this isnt directed at ya but some apply

why do low income family's need more than one car ?

why do low income family's sadle them selfs with sky/smart fones / broadband ect ect ?

why do low income family's omly work a couple of hours ?

why do they think others should top up there wages if they cant make ends meet ?

why do this government give away millions to spongers ?

i now have a good business , but we still like not need amie to work , yes we have 2 cars, why ? because i would rather buy her a cheapy than have my merc in a supermarket !

trust me mate you are not the only person i have asked these questions to , i have fell out with a close friend over similar matters because i want to know why im paying for his rent and poll tax ! (he works cash in hand )

sorry for bluntness , but as graham said we all mates but you did ask for replies .

Crikey he must be coining it in on benefits if he can turn that down!

Grass him up !!! Then offer him £150 as a lesson in economics :D

And I will happy give it a go to answer them...

We have two cars my vect and her 4x4...this is because I work full time and she works part time...able us both to get to work and home as its no good using buses round here that stop after 6pm and then a taxi would be £20 from my work home

We dont have sky or BT vison...got a cheap freesat box when we moved in...dont have expensive phone contracts..£25 for both of us...had a home phone, free all time calls and broadband that is £25 a month all in..helps having the net at home for emails banking etc

I work about 50 hours roughly per week...lass works 20..this is down to child care costs simple as that...once he turns 3 and he can go to 15 hours a week lass will do more hours then to help and then we will be just about free of tax credits due to earning £24k a year.

The part about topping up wages is a hard one and would take too long to write..its more a case of whats the point of working when you get more on benefits ...thats the whole point of this thread. I did not see it as topping up our wage...more a chance for us to both work without having to worry about high nursery charges

why do this government give away millions to spongers....no idea and this is where it needs to start...giving Abbi with her 4 kids Mercedes, Chardanay, Brooklyn and Marri Ann MORE in money than the average family earn a week

No, not lucky at all . All achieved by hard work and commitment . It has taken him ten years to get to the top of the tree and reap the benefits . Luck is winning the lottery .

oh I am sorry accidents do happen and dont believe in the other way "deal" with it

I could have walked away and let the state deal with it like some do but instead IO went and stepped up and dealt with it

A little off track from the original post but, here's my soapbox moment.

No doubt the benefits system is flawed but, I think it's a crying shame that benefits claimants should feel that they need to be offered incentives before they will go and get themselves into work.

I don't think it's right that benefits claimants should look upon their handouts as something that replaces the work ethic/wage. At some point society lost the plot; that benfits should be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice. No one should be worse off when they go to work but, I don't accept that the 'job' has to pay more than the benefits package in order to make the job worthwhile. What's been lost is the morality that says, although I could stay at home and accept £x a week in handouts, I'll go out and earn the same amount and, I'll pay my own way.
