bedwards1966
Anything Japanese will do. Only go for a Landy if you have money to spend on repairs, and don't need reliability. Your budget should get you something quite reasonable.

Cosd
I bought my first 4x4 a few months ago, a TD5 Land Rover Discovery. Absolutely love it with no regrets. Regards costs if they break down, yes it isn't cheap, but unlike any other car there's tonnes of stuff on the second hand market at reasonable prices. And remember any of the above mentioned 4x4 are expensive to fix if they go wrong. The Disco will do anything you throw at it and is also has great presence on the road. If you are interested in the discovery, have a look through Thed2boysclub forum for tips on buying, fixing etc. it's a great site. kent
any is a compromise for me the Subaru Forester XT forfill my needs and has for quite some time now. Only lacks the extra ground clearance but you wont bottom it on any rough track, its controlable on the real slippy stuff, great turning circle. Ploughed fields and 3ft of river it wont like but find me another capable car off road that can hit the bends like a scooby with its perminant symetrical 4 weel drive and low centre of gravity aided by the flat four engine, its been places a pickup without a load wont go and maybee the best ever snow car on the road. To say this about a car you personally have had from new and done 140k in counts for something, two weel bearings and two sets of drop link bushes are all the repairs. Its off road daily

Peter a lot comes down to how much you are going to use it and what for, seeing your location I guess you may well want a proper 4x4 rather than a forester or the likes. Some also comes down to how many miles you are going to do as to how economical it needs to be, personally I'm on my 2nd L200 this one I've done 30k in the last 18 months and just had normal servicing its been great. Economy is about 28-30 depending how much is off road dead stuff and dogs go in the back and there isn't much thats better for lamping. I use it day to day hence the miles it does and when you look the last of the old shape are a bargain, the newer shape are more refined and are better mpg wise but are more expensive, so its a trade off. If you want something more car orientated then the xtrail gets my vote above the freelander both will with the right tyres go most places you should be going. People will scare you with cost of spares etc but personally I'm yet to find anything particularly frightening cost wise as ever buy on condition and history rather than the cheapest as it works out cheaper in the long run. I drive my other halfs parents disco td5 regularly and can safely say I hate it with a passion just seems to lumber and roll everywhere just not suited to my driving
HDAV
Depends alot if you need it as a car as well or not Nissan terrano worth a look the better off road the worse on and off road tyres will give poor performance on road and be worse on fuel, if you drive like a granny you might manage ok on fuel with a disco/shogun etc or a pickup the RAV is a nice drive and will cope with tracks no problem Jeeps are thirsty but the 4.7 is fun! Ssangyong are decent value rexton

matone
Bought a Honda CR-V last year and it`s proved to be an excellent allround vehicle.I have the same requirements as the OP and the CR-V has ticked all the boxes. Not a serious off-roader but good enough and superb on the tarmac. jgguinness
Everyone bangs on about how unreliable Land Rovers are but I can say, hand on heart I've not had any major problems with ANY of mine that I have had. I have had a 1962 S2a, a '67 S2a, currently have a '69 S2a, a '77 S3, a '96 Defender V8, a '97 P38 Range Rover and currently a '96 Disco 300 TDI. I've never lost moneybon them, and in fact have made money on the Series ones that I have sold. The Rangie did cost me a bit regarding air suspension but was bought for £3k and sold for £3k just over a year later, minus suspension bits but in context was a cheap car for a years motoring. Apart from general service items, touch wood nothing else major. I reckon a decent Disco will do exactly what you need/want. I had a '98 Jeep Cherokee 4 ltr which was ok but not a patch on the Landy's. Regards Jonathan
