The 222 is also a calibre thats on my future list. I think it might have been over shadowed some what by the 223 but i think thats a lot to do with the 223 being more widely available. Both in Rifles for sale and also factory rounds and even reloading components.

Balistically i think they are pretty much identical although some of the lads on here who have possibly owned either calibre or both might tell you in more detail.

Never the less the triple still has a strong following and its a calibre i have always liked and a one thats most certainly a great foxing round.

Have a search on the net, theres some good rifles out there.

Out of interest have you considered a 204, another alternative to the 222 or 223 :good:

Pat

i did speak to feo today and they allow 204 so that is an option but i want a fox gun for a limited budget as i shall probably only fire 50rounds per year max,

was looking on gun trader and you can pick a 222 set up for £300/400 where as the 223 are fetching a lot more

There's a used Howa 1500 in 204 on Guntrader for £325 Colin. Like i say though i'm hankering after a triple myself. Basically to fit in between my 22lr and 243. The hmr is going to have to go to fund it though :lookaround:

Great choice and a wise used purchase. Well capable of taking foxes to ranges beyond the ability of 99% of rifle shooters. also a better candidate than the .223 for downloading if you fancy in the future

thanks kent i did think that if i get on ok with it that next year i may look at reloading

I use a .222 for foxes. Haven't had it long, but I love it. Lovely shooting round, sweet as a nut, very little recoil, slightly quieter than .223 and phenomenally accurate. Taken foxes to 300 yds and it knocks them over with absolute authority. I also use mine for long range rabbits. Its over the top but not ridiculously so. But accurate!... I used to think the HMR could shoot.....! :)

I use Federal 40grn Vshok because my rifle drills them. Some will say I should use 50s for fox, but the 40s floor them without a twitch and they're that little bit flatter for the bunnies.

Factory ammo isn't cheap. Or not round here it isn't. SGC charge £26 a box - yes I know, but there's no-one else. (Their Federal .223 is £1 cheaper). Load your own and you can't go wrong.

I was intending to buy a new .223, but a bargain s/h triple came my way and I haven't looked back. The .222 is a peach.

Shot a triple from the mid nineties I think, great little round for fox and, where legal, roe. Shame you aren`t any nearer as I could have sold you a heap of ammo for peanuts as I have a load of factory stuff that I am steadily getting through for plinking and barrel warming as I reload.

Don`t forget to get vermin added to it as it is great for crows (on the ground) too.

Gimlet, i think you have just helped me make a decision there  I've been thinking of which calibre would best suit my needs as a walkabout rifle and was toying with a 204. However i have always liked the triple since i started shooting years ago. Never owned one but shot a few. Yip i think you have just helped me make my mind up there :good:

Cheers :thanks:

You won't regret it.

I was faced with the same choice. It came down to a .22 Hornet, a .204, a .222 or a .223. My thinking was I wanted more reach than a Hornet; the .204 would be good fun and accurate but not legal for any deer species in the UK and prone to wind deflection. A fine round but perhaps a touch more specialised than the 22 cals for my purposes. The .223 has a touch more powder, a touch more noise and is a smidgeon flatter, but the real advantage is its a military round, most manufacturers make a rifle chambered for it and the world is awash with .223 ammo. Great for shooters who are buying new and don't reload which leaves some real s/h bargains to be had in .222.

As a general purpose walkabout rifle a triple will be hard to beat. They don't call it the keeper's favourite for nothing.

Enjoy :good:

i just got one.

Chose it over .223/.204 etc

quieter than the .223,

cheaper than the .223 (not as trendy so mine cost pennies)

deer legal compared to the .20's

cheaper to feed (22gr N133! Privi 50gr at £14 a box of 20 otherwise)

very accurate and easy to reproduce when reloading
