"An overwhelming majority of people want gun magazines that show animals being killed for sport consigned to newsagents’ top shelves alongside pornography, according to a new public opinion poll. An even higher proportion want the sale of such publications restricted to people over the age of 18.

Eight-four per cent of respondents to the NOP poll, which was commissioned by Animal Aid, favour a ban on the sale of gun magazines to children. Seventy-four per cent want them banished to top shelves."

"Commissioned by Animal Aid" says it all, don't you think?

This is a case of not letting the facts spoil a "good" story. I do hope the organisations are in the process of jumping all over this from a great height

Pointless it may be, but the anti propaganda machine is marching on unchallenged and spreading it's untruthful drivel.

The sad thing is I have seen nothing to counter this untruth from any of the parties that are supposed to represent us. We are letting the seeds be sown and from a little seed does a big oak grow.

Never mind, we'll all sit back just like we did after Hungerford and Dunblane and it'll all be ok.

OK get me all the facts and I'll get it checked NOP are a decent sized organisation but unless the sample is huge it's pointless. OK got it I'll report back

Here you go.

A pretty small sample, and as is always the case statistics can be made to read whatever you want them to read.

Animal Aid paid GfK to carry out the report and will obviously have made clear to them the results they required. The rest is pretty simple, target the right people and you get the answers you want.

An interesting little snip from the GfK website below. The middle paragraph just about sums it up really!

Its such a ridiculous petty thing; they want to waste parliamentary time getting this into legislation in the middle of a recession! A child reading shooting magazines is not a problem! How many children actually buy the magazines themselves anyway? My dad used to buy the countryman’s weekly and Shooting times, and I had the Airgun Magazines on subscription, so came in the post. You know what, I grew-up to be a responsible, safe, well informed gun owner who shoots for pleasure and pest control. I think if a rational person actually saw the contents of these ‘lurid’ magazines they would understand that, whilst it may not be something they might read on the toilet, it would be no harm for a youngster to read it.

I don’t think it will happen but, a 15 year old who can legally own and use a shotgun wouldn’t be allowed to purchase a magazine that could help improve and inform him on shooting, including safety, now that seems like a crazy situation.

It's not that simple, Animal aid won't have commissioned the "survey" but bought 2 questions on an omnibus survey relating to magazines. NOP will have had people stood outside somewhere and will have asked 1000 people (usually various locations across the country) 20-40-100 questions about magazines. It's actually how the questions are worded which is key. This is why I have asked a senior social researcher to look at the details for me and provide some feedback.

My guess is the "magazine survey" is done on high streets in towns around the UK...They are trying to make an issue out of nothing.

So they want shooting magazines on top shelfs because children might see pictures of dead animals? But on most anti shooting websites they have loads of pictures of dead animals? Go on league against cruel sports Facebook page and see the rubbish on there... What's stopping a child looking at them????

Just bought a copy of Sporting Shooter from a newsagents in Risca (Newport, South Wales) and guess where it was?, yep on the top shelf along with Air Gunner and also the Angling magazines. Have the newsagents already been advised to move them? If so the rot has already started. Hopefully this is just that particular newsagents normal practice (small independent) otherwise we could alredy be in trouble.

That's what they want, but of course any child doing the weekly Tesco shop with their parents can see plenty of dead animals (or parts of) on the shelves.

Perhaps Animal Aid will be protesting outside the local butchers next and telling them to cover up the wares in their window displays?

Some shops do it out of choice, but Animal Aid are putting "pressure" on all shops to do the same.

I usually buy a magazine at WHSmith at the airport when I travel between home and university. I'll keep an eye out this time, will even ask the staff at the till why if it's the case

WHSmith has been targeted by Animal Aid, so be sure to look. If shooting magazines are on the top shelf, ask about it.

Probably not. After all, the shooting community are smaller and as a result are easier to attack. They campaign against meat, but they won't target meat eaters in that way because meat eaters would fight back much harder. Animal Aid are just looking for battles to win at the moment. It's point scoring.

Q1 – Do you think children should be exposed to images of bloody dead animals in Magazines?

Answer from parent – Hmm. I saw my sons’ friends copy of ‘Nuts’ the other day and it had a horrible picture of a run over donkey. I think I’ll say No to that.

The Survey says.

Parents agree that under 18s should be banned from buying shooting magazines that show dead animals.

It only took me a minute to plan that question and answer.

If it was a full time job I’m sure any of us could plan a question to give the right answer.

An important development:

http://www.animalaid.org.uk/h/n/NEWS/news_shooting//2742//

Animal Aid are encouraging supporters to campaign outside newsagents which sell shooting magazines, by handing out leaflets outside WHSmiths and others.

The email for WHSmith magazines is magazines@whsmith.co.uk and I am going to send an email. I encourage others to do the same for WHSmiths and for other newsagents. I would also encourage people to write to newspapers and put our side of the argument across.

We should not be complacent about stuff like this, as it is a very real threat to shooting and the countryside.

I think everyone should order 1000 leaflets from Animal Aid...then dump them. :yp:

I don't know how much it costs to produce and post 1000 leaflets but 'every little helps' :D

If we did this, and then posted them back to Animal Aid,but without a stamp, would AA have to pay the postage?

Not sure. Does anyone know if that would work? It would be brilliant if it did.

I'm off to do some armchair activism.

Make sure you put their address as the sender and shred them before returning them RM charge £1 per underpaid item and as they would have to go in the post box you would need several envelopes. Half of them would probably be lost before they arrived....

I thought you are supposed to mail it to them without a stamp, and not put a return adress on it? That way they, the recipient, has to pay to get their mail. Or have I got it wrong?

There also isn't much point unless loads of people are going to do it.

I did complain to a shooting magazine a few years back after some particularly messy pictures. All I did was phoned the editor and pointed out that they were likely to be used against us and that it was playing into the wrong people's hands. But the internet is awash with picture now. Why do people post up vids of runners? dumb IMO.
