ferguson_tom
My Jimny is giving me 32mpg but some of that is driving around fields in low gears. My LWB terrano does that and that is a boat. For smaller 4x4s i have been impressed with the Terrano so would look at the SWB one. To keep your mrs happy a freelander would be your best bet, they are the nicest of the small 4x4s inside. The jimnys are cracking motors but for me far too small, also if your going from a sports car to a Jimny get ready for barrel loads of stick from your mates who still have there sports cars, that is until they see the pics off you offroading with it
al4x
Total leftfield suggestion here. Jeep Wrangler. It’s a fun convertible in the summer, it’s also a bloody good 4x4. It’s more comfortable than the Defender equivalents. You can get a decent TJ model for 3-4k. They come with 2.5 or 4l petrol engines so aren’t particularly economical. But, if you still want a toy for a car it’s one hell of a toy. A 4l straight six with no roof will make you grin all day long. If you pop out the back seats you could easily bolt in a decent box for a gun or two, and with the roof off it would be excellent to shoot from. If you want some luxury you might just about be in Disco 3 territory – decent ones can be had for about 10k now. If you want something a bit older and more rugged then a 3l Hilux Surf can be a good bet. Like someone up there said though – make sure you get decent M&S tyres on the car. For a road biased off road tyre I like the General Grabber UHP – but other opinions exist. they even have a brokeback mountain special edition

HDAV
Thanks Vampire Im pretty clueless when it comes to 4x4s, but im looking to part x my sports car for something more practical. Ive recently found it hard ti get to certain areas in my permission (not talking hardcore off road here) and currently dont have enough boot space for my gear and for the dog. Whats the current car? hedd-wyn
Thanks Vampire Whats the current car? It's a Citroen C4 Coupe Sport, been a good car but totally unpractical for me these days.

HDAV
Not something I am familiar with, there is plenty of choice around I still say Xtrail, Freelander, CR-V or Rav4 are good compromise between Car and offroad Vitara are no where near as nice to drive on road and most others are much larger. Latest freelanders are just in your budget but high mileage 100k+ Jimny/Pinin will go off road but will have smaller boots than the C4 and be more cramped. defeats the point really

ferguson_tom
It's a Citroen C4 Coupe Sport, been a good car but totally unpractical for me these days. If thats because of space dont bother looking at the standard 3 door Vitara or Jimny. Any of the Freelander, X trail, CRV, grand vitara as suggested above would probably do you best. I think just have to go see them all and decide what you like the most as if you have had a citreon then even the freelander repair bills wont be a shock
chrispti
Keep your current car and get a jimmy, take the rear seats out, there's plenty of room for your gear and a dog. They are cheap to run, maintain, tax and insure.
ajm1979
+1 for above, keep your normal car and get yourself a cheap 4x4 for shooting, I paid £750 for a Fourtrak 2 years ago put a set of decentish tyres on it and it goes anywhere, gets used and abused and I'm never bothered about getting it scratched, dented filthy, costs next to nothing to insure just have to tax it and few quid on its mot each year but well worth it

chrispti
If your going to run 2 might as well get a proper one...... And pay for it too ..... Double the road tax, running cost, insurance etc, not really worth it if your just using it at the weekends. Plus he stated he lives in a small road, so nothing too bulky and the off roading is nothing hardcore ;0) Edited September 21, 2012 by chrispti
WelshLamb
Double road tax? My V8 defender costs the same to tax as my little mk2 golf and is cheaper to insure!

chrispti
Double road tax? My V8 defender costs the same to tax as my little mk2 golf and is cheaper to insure! Depends on age I suppose, he has about 5k to spend, so I assume he would get something a bit newer. My jimny is £125 pa road tax, and not much more to insure. HDAV
Or get a tax exempt series 2a no tax to pay, classic insurance, no cartridge costs as ever spare minute will be spent working on it........it's a whole new hobby.
WelshLamb
just don't mention the 8 times more it costs in fuel If cost of fuel was an issue for me I'd have kept her as a diesel Just lurrrrrve that note it plays when you boot it in 3rd gear... The note that means she's doing about 6mpg
cockercas
Quick note on tyres if you get a jimny. I've got M/Ts on and get 10-12mpg on a run. They are an aggressive pattern tho

cockercas
With road tyres I get high 20s. Mud tyres I get 12 at best. Why would I make it up? What have I possibly got to gain?
HDAV
Not saying it isn't true just saying at that price per mile I would want something with more grunt a mate had a grand Cherokee that did did 17 mpg round town 4.7 V8 auto! vampire
Thats why i just sold my frontera, just to have it on the road was a thousand pound each year and with 3 motors to run it was a bit much, now put a deposit on a freelander that will replace the frontera and the family car.
