aldivalloch
Well, the letter got publicised in the Aberdeen Press & Journal, and before any of the less well informed start laughing, that's a newspaper that sells approximately 70,000 copies a day and has wider circulation than the "Scotsman" and the "Glasgow Herald" - I've bought it in places as far apart as Lerwick (Shetland) and Edinburgh. Mind you, most of Scotland - i.e. the civilised part, north of the Central Belt - is probably already well aware of the benefits of field sports and the pleasures of eating game...... onefulham
I had a quick glance ( too be honest that's all they are worth ) in our 2 local papers , here in Mid Bedfordshire, I will keep an eye out, though to be honest it would be speaking to the converted around here, better to concentrate round here on say Luton, Bedford, MK, Watford etc. Great to see BASC being proactive and not just answering to the anti lead. Whitebridges
Very good to hear this. I'll be looking out for print in our local paper,The Eastern Daily Press. More of this type of thing is exactly what the good old boys at BASC should be doing. Keep on turning it up! No joy, unless i've missed it? Are the journ'o's still down the boozer then David BASC? You said " But today BASC has sent a letter to all local newspapers in the UK highlighting the benefits of game shooting and game meat." The BASC promised various things through it's internal investments. http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/news/446838/BASC_moves_to_media_HQ.html Well, i'm waiting for a bit more "action" and killer return on capital. David BASC
Of course, I have no idea what individual journalists are doing, but I do know the letter went by e-mail to over 700 papers all over the UK. If it’s not in your local paper, you could always ring them up or e-mail them to ask why not? You could always let us know what they say. As to what’s being delivered by the BASC media centre, just look at the Key issues, and News sections of the BASC web site and of course, have a look at the BASC films too. We are always interested to hear from anyone who reads something in the papers or hears something on the Radio, or sees something on the TV that is pro or anti shooting; just get in touch with our press office and they will do the rest, and of course do their best. David.

David BASC
Try a taste of game October 1st is the official start of the pheasant shooting season. As the season gets underway, there will be plenty of affordable, locally-sourced and tasty game meat available. Game meat is healthy, sustainable and highly nutritious and has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. So why don't you give game a go? Try a tasty pheasant casserole or ask your butcher about venison. The UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), works year round to encourage people to try game meat. Shoot providers spend £250 million a year on conservation and shooting is involved in the management of two thirds of the rural land area. People who shoot put in 2.7 million work days on conservation projects each year. Sales of game meat were expected to reach £84 million last year. poontang
I can't help but feel that's almost an advert to justify game shooting, rather than push for people to try game meat. Would it not have been possible to have had a piece written by someone like Marco Pierre White? Like it or not people identify with 'celebrity' and MPW would be instantly recognisable to a wide range of the population, whereas mentioning BASC as the 'UK's largest shooting organisation' is likely to alienate more than it embraces. I do hope the press release wasn't a knee jerk reaction to our friends from the RSPB and WWT who have just released this? http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691512006126 Edited October 2, 2012 by poontang
Nial
From that paper.... We used data on lead concentrations in UK gamebirds, from which gunshot had been removed following cooking to simulate human exposure to lead. Whereas I'm sure most people try to make sure all the lead's out _before_ cooking. Does this completely negate the study? Nial
David BASC
Our press release has been planned for ages and was not a reaction to anything at all. It was always planned to go out at the end of September Turning now to the preparation of meat - game or other, then yes it is of course common practice to remove anything from the meat BEFORE cooking! Would we scramble eggs with their shells and then try to take the bits of shell out afterwards?
poontang
Our press release has been planned for ages and was not a reaction to anything at all. It was always planned to go out at the end of September That may be so, but you've known about the RSPB/WWT study for ages too. It is after all the study they were asked to produce on behalf of the LAG. The fact that it has been put in the public domain before being placed in front of the LAG speaks volumes as to their involvement in, and the future of the LAG as a whole. Isn't it time the whole sorry episode was put to bed? Irrespective of the above, and assuming the press release wasn't in response to the WWT/RSPB study, I still feel BASC and shooting as a whole, could, and should look more at using high profile shooters/hunters in their promotion of the sport. Marco Pierre White was just one suggestion, but there are plenty of well known sportsmen, entertainers and 'celebrities' who shoot/fish/hunt who should be brought on board. Do you think the anti badger cull petition would have gained so much support if it wasn't for Brian May? Of course not. Unfortunately in this day and age people are more willing to 'follow' whatever their 'idols' tell them. The anti's know that and use it to their advantage...maybe it's time we took a leaf out of their book?
David BASC
As I say, the BASC mailing to the press re game shooting and the BASC Taste of Game campaign, which is now in its 16th year (originally called Games On and before that The Campaign for Game') was planned well in advance. WWT made it clear at Christmas that they were going to attack lead in game foods, so yes their published paper is no surprise I agree, but you may remember it was their intention to get celebs on board to help their cause, and have failed to do so. On your point about using celbs, yes I agree, that’s why we have been using the likes of Mike Robinson and Anthony Evans, Clarissa Dixon – Wright and others on over the years to help promote our campaigns. Terry P
David if your going to use celebs, perhaps some that someone under the age of 40 might have heard of could help. They would need to be more current than CDR. I saw in a recent shooting mag it might even have been BASC mag a clothing company had Alister Cooke and a england rugby player(could not place his name sorry i'm welsh lol), these are the sort of people you need to be looking at, there must be some football players that shoot, we need to get over to the general public that its not only the rich and privately educated that shoot. I don't know if he's got it back, but I do know the anti's would be bringing up his past at every opportunity. Hardly the best choice as an ambassador to the sport. poontang
Who would you suggest? Adam Henson would be a good one, pretty much all the top chefs shoot/hunt, Jackie Stewart, Alistair Cook, Kieran Cunningham, Chris Evans, Eric Clapton would all be good publicity for the sport. All have been, or are still at the top of their respective games, media savvy and covering a wide range of interests. I'm sure there are plenty of others but that's just a few to be going on with. Actually you could probably throw in Jeremy Clarkson as a wildcard........but then again.
