Is beating becoming hard to find?

I've been trying to find somewhere to go beating around Cambs and it's been really hard going!

I know of a couple of shoots that have folded due to various reasons (the main one being the wretched Great Fen Project - don't get me started!!) but when I was younger gamekeepers were crying out for beaters!!

Is it the same elsewhere in the country?

Cheers

Its very much a case of who you know rather than much else, the more local clay shoots you do and locals you frequent the higher the odds on meeting the right people. Sadly cold calling doesn't get much of a response simply because keepers tend to be quite careful who they have about. We've taken over a small syndicate and have kept a couple of beaters we wanted to keep ditched the rest and kept the number reasonably low. There did used to be a lot of idiots involved with this one though, life when running a beating line is far simpler and it works far better with 10 who know what they are doing than 20 who don't.

I wouldn't waste your money on nobs from what I've heard, there's more talk than offers but others may say I'm wrong. Its taken me ages to find somewhere and I have dog, its only thanks to Beerdore (of PW) and a chancing comment on facebook that I managed to get anywhere at all. A lot of my clients have dogs and shoots and I still couldn't get anywhere. Its more who you than what you know but keep at it something will come along, mix in the right circles - is my tip!! Sunday arvo pint in a village pub and big ears

As a keeper I would say I have quite a few people who ask me for beating. It is very hard to find the right people its amazing how many adults cant keep a straight line and many have told me they have got a great dog what they didn't tell me is it was great at running in or doing the next drive.

. On my shoot we have four pickers up and about twelve beaters the pickers up sort them selves out no prob the beaters on the other hand need constant attention out of the twelve there are only four I can count on to be in the right place they have to help keep the others in line. On a plus side I have just let a new lad who is only 14 help and he's a breath of fresh air with lot of potential when you ask him to do a job he is very keen and runs to get the muel at the end of the drive and is always watching to make sure he's in line and very keen to help with all jobs.

I would suggest you try meet a keeper offer to help out through out the year and im sure a spot in the beating line will be available my best four beaters often come down the farm most saturdays to help out with odd jobs. They always get rewarded with xtra shooting.
