Spaniel
As my ticket is up at the end of march, i just had my home visit by my the local officer, all went well showed him the shotguns etc which he found interesting. so got the ticks to apply for my renewal which i will do after the wildfowling season is over. one mention was installing a coded safe to keep the cabinet keys locked away in, not essential but i thought this was a good idea. just wondering if any one else have already done the same.. Blackbart
I think the safe is a bad idea as if someone breaks in they will want the safe or try to open it and if they do they will have your guns. If you hid the keys under the 4th shelf in the airing cupboard (no i dont ) they will never get the keys
Spaniel
yep know what you are saying, he was happy with 99% of my security but was thinking about that extra 1% side of it, with having younge children in the house.... didnt want to go anti on the idea in front of him.. al4x
I'd put the second safe somewhere hidden but its not a bad idea. I have mine on my keyring so they are always with me when I leave the house, if we had children then I would probably go down a similar route to the combination safe. gixer1
I have an electroninc safe (2 of them actually) and one of them has been cleared as my ammo safe by the FEO, they are very secure and mounted away from the cabinet - one design flaw I made was installing a gun safe in a room that eventually became one of my kids rooms but as long as it is always locked then it should never be an issue. If intruders wanted to get the locations of the keys out of someone they would...regardless of where they were, once someone ties you up and puts tissuepaper on fire around your neck you'll tell them where Jimmy Hoffa in buried! Yes, firearms officer now dealing with the more difficult cases and i guess new requests, the local bobby is dealing with the more simple renewal checks, guess it comes down to cost savings like everything these days. But he did say if he had any concerns he would not auth the renewal or in extreme circumstances he could remove the guns there and then... Bloke
I have my FAC combination lock ammo safe that I put my keys in for everyday use while I am at home, but when I am away I have a secure approved key safe in a less accessible part of the house, covered separately by the alarm. All you can do is take 'reasonable' precautions, as the guidelines say.

sandspider
Was the FEO the new bloke? How was he? (I think **** M has gone now, as part of the cuts...?) Where the banned word is the short form of Richard!
Spaniel
as i understand it he is just a local bobby, or he is new as he was surprised not to see all my guns showing on the cert....although his copy was correct well he was driving a 4x4 with police all over it
Vermincinerator
Very strange if you ask me, to turn up 4 months before your SGC expires and then tell you that he is okay for you to go ahead with your renewal simply does not add up, i would be feeling very uneasy about this and would check with the licensing office and ask whats going on. something not right here! bedwards1966
Be VERY careful with these electronic safes. The police may be happy with them, but some of them are less than useless. One tap can be enough to open them, they have a terribly weak design. Watch this before spending your money, it'll show you what to avoid. Yes, it does work, I've done it - then I promptly stopped using the thing for anything that needed to be locked up! They are a great magnet for a thief, they tell them that you've something valuable and it's so easy for them to get in without any time, tools or effort. Blackbart
I bought one of these safes in a joblot of other stuff at auction a while back and it took 10 mins to open it but i thought it must have been broken Maybe not
manfriday
I am yet to find out if that's ok cause I got to lock my ammo, bolt and safe in a coded safe.I am sure it's fine
Vermincinerator
everything is fine, guess what popped through the letter box this afternoon, my renewal reminder...that was good timing In the time period of less then 24 hours since your police visit, your renewal reminder popped through the letterbox?? looks like an overlap there somewhere mate. Considering that the police usually use snail mail that was very quick, unless it was hand delivered. This sounds even more suspicious to me, if i was you i would contact your licensing office and confirm that they did indeed send an officer around to see you, its possible that you have had a visit from a bogus police officer, i would want peace of mind mate. HDAV
Was it a prearranged visit? Booked by liscencing office? Or did they pop round on the off chance?
onefulham
I was advised to do this as well, got one of those small key safes you see outside elderly or vulnerable people's houses to let their careers in, about £12 off the Fleabay so good we got one for my Mums house before she had to go into a home due to Alzheimer's , I was also advised to keep the spare set of keys for the cabinet at work. jackinbox99
Im still amazed after watching that youtube clip that you can open a safe with nothing more than a potato!!! Ive heard a few FEO`s suggesting people keep their keys in a seperate safe, but as other people on here have said, surely thats like having a big flag saying "look at me ive got something valuable inside me" when any burglers see a safe like that. They will probably assume its just cash or jewelry, then if they see the other safe keys they will be thinking "hang on... what else has this guy got". Id much rather hide the keys somewhere on their own where only I know where they are.
