On a serious note check the trees for missing bark or scratches where badgers drag the nails across them, also they dig a hole and have a dump in it which is also a good way of knowing there are kicking about. I shoot over a golf course and the crows, rooks and magpies have caused similar damage in the past. They are after Chaffer grubs in the soil. The damage is in patches around the fairways and on some greens. Don't know if the situation is the same but the way the turf has been turned over is similar. What was the ground like before? I couldn't believe it at first until I saw a flock of about 50 crows land on one course and proceeded to destroy an otherwise pristine fairway. It's like someone has gone at it with a spade and turned the turf over. The destroyed an area of about 20 yds sq in about 20 mins.
