Cranfield
The old Communist President of Romania (Ceausescu), held many gold medals for big game through one of the International Federations. He was stripped of most of them, when it was proved that teams of hunters would go into the forests of Romania and spend weeks looking for a trophy animal, trap it and he would then come along and shoot it. This was also done for visiting Dignitaries. Seems old habits die hard. Just to stir the pot a little, I remember Jack Hargreaves shooting rabbits bolted by ferrets, on an old disused airfield in Hampshire, for his programme Country Ways . A chap who was there told me that Jack kept missing them. So, they netted an earth, caught some rabbits and loosely tied their back legs together, so they couldn't run so well. He told me this before the programme came on the TV. When I watched it (about 6 months later), you could plainly see what they had done. The rabbit ran as though its back legs were broken. Cranfield
I am a great fan of Jack Hargreaves and would find it hard to criticise him. They only had a day to film and they had to have something to show for it. Slightly "off topic", but a lot of the top carp fishing videos show alarms buzzing, carp being played and then netted. What you don't see is that the carp was caught in the night, put in a carp sack and rehooked in the morning and played for the cameras. A friend of mine (a Fishing Writer of note) was making a TV programme on pike fishing at Thorp Park. The fishing was poor and he didn't have a run. A chap further down the bank caught a 15lb pike and the TV producer asked my friend to at least pose with it. My friend refused and the resulting programme was never shown and he didn't work for that company again. I'm sure there are a million and one other similar examples. darebear
this kind of thing makes me sick. there is no honour and pride in such pathetic behaviour. that's not sport.
rarms
Perhaps, hence the expression, don't believe all you see on TV or read in the papers Where there is money to be made, people will always stretch the truth to make that bit more! I agree it is not really sporting though! But perhaps it is also niaive of the viewer to assume that all is as it seems with televised examples... Frank
This reminds me of a wildlife documentry with David attonborough (spelling ) where he did a program about hares. Apparently, the only way to get the close up shots, was to tether some of the hares to the ground. Call them selfs animal lovers? Frank. I had heard a similar thing about John Wilson, when he fished Diss Mere many moons ago, couldn't catch so he went to a fish breeder/supplier and hooked one of them. This was told to me by the owners brother, so I tend to believe it, but even so unless any of us were actually there or like with the tied rabbits legs, if it's plainly obvoius, we can't be sure at all. Its amazing how in any sport, we all start telling little white lies about what range we shot something or how big it actuallly was (Fishing), but to see people/persons who blatantly lie (Cheat) in the interest of makng money is outrageous. Poacher
I know its not on and i don't agree with it one bit,, but would you want to watch a video of someone missing bolting rabbits or someone sat at the side of a lake not catching a thing ... Im sure you'll agree it would make dull viewing

Highlander
Not decrying the entertainment value but some of the so called sporting celebs remind me of the old adage...those who can DO those who can't TEACH! Never saw Kenzie, Sid Wright, Arthur Cadman or their like on TV.
.17 hummer
Not decrying the entertainment value but some of the so called sporting celebs remind me of the old adage...those who can DO those who can't TEACH! Never saw Kenzie, Sid Wright, Arthur Cadman or their like on TV. steve irwin was another who wasnt shy about using dubious methods to get the money shot. early in his career he got caught filming snakes in the studio when it was supposed to be live in the bush, his career survived though, and he went on to become huge in aus then all round the world. i never really rated him as he took real liberties with animals and it was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened. unfortunately his head became as big as his bank balance and he paid the price , pardon the pun. you should never take liberties with any animal whether a carp or stingray. :(
