dankidd
Right guys, its almost time I bought myself a new second hand car. I currently drive a VW Passat PD130. Im looking for something that is capable of light offroading on the weekends and something to use as an everyday family vehicle during the week. I want something that is going to be fairly reliable so thats a discovery/freelander out of the window already! Looking to spend around £10k. What are your ideas?! Alfieri
2007 Nissan Xtrail has been ultra reliable, now upgrading to one newer. No issues with it over last two years.

dankidd
Is the freelander 2 actually any good? I know there are loads of demons with the freelander 1...

dankidd
I'm happy to sacrifice a bit of mpg... I know full well that I'll never see more than 30mpg from a 4x4!

robbiep
I'm going to be shouted down here, but ... For £10k, go test drive a BMW X3 2.0 diesel, manual gearbox. With normal, non-silly bling wheels (16" or 17", 18" at a push, but not an 'M-sport' car) I had one about 4 years ago. Comfortable to drive, loads of space, VERY economical to run, and normal garages can service them easily. I drove all the way from Denbigh up to Thurso once, 542 miles in a day, averaged 45 mpg with 4 people and a load of scuba gear in the boot. Got out at the end feeling absolutely fine. Usual running about it averaged about 40 mpg Edited February 3, 2013 by robbiep
B725
Is the freelander 2 actually any good? I know there are loads of demons with the freelander 1... Had mine almost two years (57 plate ) never let me down superb in the snow drives really well and will do 40 mpg at 70 on the motorway,I think the auto is better than the manual. Herts Mark
Have previously owned a Freelander 1 and was VERY disappointed. Upgraded to a 2 nearly tow years ago and absolutely love it. Cannot fault it in any way and would highly recommend
neil3728
The problem with the freelander 2 is its name, it shares no parts at all with the FL1. I have owned mine for just under 2 years and have done 42,000 miles with no problems at all. Drives like a dream, quick when needs to be an more than capable offroad. Only issue is the clutch, if you need to tow anything, get an auto. they don't like hill starts with a big trailer on the back.
Bloke
I'm happy to sacrifice a bit of mpg... I know full well that I'll never see more than 30mpg from a 4x4! I get min 32-33 per gallon from my 2007 X-Trail, and that is with an auto box, not hanging around, but not leadfooting it all over the place either. Should be a fair bit better on a manual. I tried being really careful one week, just to see what I could do, I got 36 mpg over 200 miles! Mind you, I tend to spend most of my driving without anyone else in the car. jonesbach
Im in a similar situation as yourself. Took neighbours l200 for a spin on the weekend. After reports of 24mpg I was very happy to get 37mpg from it cruising about locally...let the search begin. (Hadn't thought of the x5 if I'm honest..!)
