Traztaz
I need a bit of advice from the fellows who know!! Basically yesterday while shooting I tried for the first time to shoot one or two woodies out of a tree with the shotgun. I have normally no problem with hitting flying birds, but all shots, 4 or 5 of them at static woodies in a tree, 30 to 40 meters away resulted in the birds exiting stage right unharmed....................What on earth am I doing wrong?? anser2
A sitting pigeon has a very small killing area compared to a flying bird and often have small branches deflecting some of the pellets that are on target and need a dence pattern of shot to be sure of a strike. beerdeor
At this point Its important to know where your gun shoots..ie high low or flat hth Jim
TJ91
What gun you shooting with? I did it a time or 2 with my old lanber o/u, couldn't hit them..apparently most over and unders shoot most of the pellets above..so sitting it under the bead resulted in misses but put the bead on pigeons 'toes' resulted in kills
unclestuffy
I would have thought that the branches would put big holes in your pattern as the shot deflects from them. Were you over thinking it

Nothing. This is where full choke can play its part. When sitting on a branch of any decent size, apart from the head, most if not all of the vital area is concealed/protected. Always best to make them move if you can.
Scully
Missing static targets with a shotgun is common. Many people in this situation tend to take their time and aim the gun as they would a rifle, when simply bringing the shotgun to the shoulder and shooting immediately is often the way.Saying that, thick cover will shield a target to an extent you wouldn't think was possible, and as someone has said, tight chokes help. Bewsher500
as above very common they are designed for moving targets and over thinking it can often result in a miss
mossy835
i just aim at the feet, works well
JJsDad
As Mossy has said. Most guns (particularly SxS) print their pattern slightly above the point of aim therefore if you shoot at at its feet you will catch him with more of the pattern.
