What reloader do you recommend for 12g

Recommended Posts

You can't go too far wrong with a Lee load all...... and as it happens I have a few of those!

I have Lee load all 2 brand new in the box for £50 plus delivery (£57 in total) and I a lso have a new Improved model Lee load all which is set for 67mm cases. This is the original metal bottomed press and is hard to come by nowadays - especially new.k I would do that for £53 delivered

Hi Daz,

Welcome to Pigeon Watch, regarding your question an important factor would be how much you shoot or are planning to shoot. Most of us that shoot quite frequently use progressive reloaders that turn out a finished shell with each pull of the handle. If you shoot just a little a single stage would probably accomadate you. I employ a Pacific M366 and have used it since 1983 and it keeps on ticking after thousands of reloads. Mec is a good machine as is Ponsness Warren. Take a look at component costs and availability before buying---lead shot is getting harder to find and buying factory may be cheaper in the long haul.

if you are just starting out and thinking of trying, the lee is an ok machine. it churns out shells as fast as a mec single stage. i bought a mec because of a recomendation, then i upgraded again and i will again upgrade to a progressive someday.

i reload specialised shells, and funny ammo and the odd weird shell. the mec allows me to do that.

if you were to start reloading, you will loose 1/2 the price of a reloader as soon as you buy it. the lee is resalable after reloading if you dont get on with reloading.

lee / MEC / PW / HANDJOB / dillon are only tools to assemble stuff. assemble the wrong components and all machines make chaff.

Thank you very much for your input and experience it is greatly appreciated.

i was looking at the mec 9000 because of the speed of production.

i am looking to make my own shot so it should turn out quite a bit cheaper even if i have to buy the lead.

could you please tell me if i can load 67mm cartridges and 70mm cartridges on the mec 9000

or should i be looking at a different machine.

i usually shoot 2 or 3 thousand cartridges a year.

cheers

Daz

My experiences as a newby reloader are:

Lee Loadall.

Very easy to use, does an ok job. No adjustments needed, just sort of plug and play. The finished shell is ok, but as the experienced guys will tell you, a spinner will tidy the whole thing up

Mec.

I have the 600jr.

Setting up a mec is quite tricky, you need to understand what its doing and how it works to be successful with setting it up or you will trash shell after shell. But when its done, it does a pretty much perfect job and is much more of a professional unit.

My advice would be to see if there is anyone near enough to show you the ropes and help set up/show you. In either case be it Mec or Lee, the components and the stack heights are crucial. Ask for help if and advice before you hit a problem, the reloading guys are about the most helpful members on here :good:

Right lads thank you for all your input and i have plumped for a MEC 9000 with a load of extras.

just got to wait for it to arrive from the good old US of A.

i have decided to use (once I've shot them) some clear pigeon 70mm shells

because all my other shells are hull high pheasant 67mm or eley vip game 65mm

Cheers

the lee is the way to go you can load 67 & 70 0n them

simple to use low cost + all the shot & powder bushes come with them

+ no set on the crimp to do just put in shot and powder bushes 2 min job and away you go

the only down side is if you want to change the shot or powder if its got some in it

you have to tip it out and you can get powder in the shot

but if you use only 1 powder its fine

if you want to load say 12 & 20 you can change the head unit for around £20

but easier to get 2 loaders 1 for 12g & 1 for the 20g
