sako751sg
Had a missed call on Monday afternoon from a fella that has a hill farm that can get hammered by the red so a phone back confirmed they had been munching on two parks of barley. Was a school night so said I would try later on the week but an hoor later decided to try that evening as ill probably be away to Inverness shortly and might nay get a chance,so home, packed up and away by 1800. It takes a good hour and when we got there we held up to the hoose to drop off a bottle and a sea troot, but with no answer we hung it on the door handle, parked up and got kitted up.Still 24 degrees and melting and with the wind spot on started off but after 100 yards the fella came up the drive so we held back for a news with him and just as well as the direction they were coming from would have been wrong for where we were heading. After sorting everything back in the Jeep we held away in the opposite direction where we could get within 700 yards of the wood with the Jeep and a walk of approx 300 yards covered all bases. No red in sight on the way but a good looking buck was grazing within shot but decided to wait incase the big lads appeared. Had only been sat for a half hoor when a hind appeared, around 700 away and not where the fella had said they were coming, but with the wind spot on it still wasn't too bad,and within 10 mins around 50 red had came oot the wood, legged it to the barley and started grazing.Mostly hinds and calves but at least 8 ******* and spikers were with them,so a check with the binos said a crawl of 300ish was needed to get into a decent firing position so off we went.It was an uncut park of silage and was hard going but we eventually made it withoot alerting any which was lucky considering the pairs of eyes that were there and we started checking to see the best option for grassing. We were in nay hurry and with some starting to lie doon we chose two ******* that were together and hoping to get a crack at both.I was just contemplating taking a shot when I realised there was a lot of bleating to our right, and also realised the faint roaring of stags, and when I looked in that direction it was like giant red ants running about.Put up the binos, and the first one I saw was a ten pointer, next an eight and then realised there was bunch of at least 20 matures stags along with loads of hinds and calves and guessed to be over 100 altogether. This put a different direction to things, and with them being below us if they kept coming it would mean the possibility of them coming within 50 yards so the pulse went up a notch or two and we crawled towards them for about 50 just to make sure the wind didn't create an issue, especially with it starting to drop. They were oot of sight for a good 15mins and we were starting to think they had carried on up the valley when there appeared a black set of antlers below us at 70 so I set up on the dyke and carried on scoping them for the best option. The bigger lads wouldn't stand still for long and kept chasing the smaller stags so I took an 8 pointer and decided to just stay on him and if the shot was on to take it.Seemed like ages but eventually it was spot on although he did take a step on the squeeze, but the pill was on the button and he dropped,so I got onto this huge 10 pointer and followed him but when he stopped he was in front of any amount of others so didn't take him as the pill could have went anywhere on exit and maybe hit another.By this time Mac was telling me there was another one to oor right, but infact it was the first lad who had got up and was running very sickly doonhill, but after 80 he stood, staggered for a few seconds and dropped. On going back for the motor, and getting to the stag we noticed some of the red still grazing less than 200 yards away so they haven't been put off much so will have try again as the damage that amount will be doing wont be tolerated.Cleaned, heed and feet off he was 13.5 stane so a decent size, even moreso when trying to lift into the Jeep.Hopefully get a crack at them this weekend and see if that buck is still cutting aboot.
