zipmiester
Hi guys I have a rotary but find using it scares the birds off ?? Not all but a fair few hence I haven't taken it out for a long time .I was told always have it out the back of your pattern and to the side ? I'm using a turbo flapper from as decoys and must say easier to carry and has the pulling power !!! I might just bag the rotary off and get another flapper , ATM I'm using the flapper on a long net pole tapped to it over standing barley , what's your opinions keep the rotary ? Are they any good or is a flapper better ? I know its down to the individual but if you comment I can build a picture cheers :-)

motty
I've posted on here before that i pretty much always use a magnet - sometimes two or three. I honestly can't understand why other people have such problems with magnets and are always 'scaring birds off'. Maybe i'm lucky and i shoot in places that aren't overshot. Ozzie
Set your flappers / decoys out as you normally would and put the rotary out at the bottom of the field and see what happens. I personally would not go out without my rotary, but do move things around if they are being spooked.
Cosd
I've posted on here before that i pretty much always use a magnet - sometimes two or three. I honestly can't understand why other people have such problems with magnets and are always 'scaring birds off'. Maybe i'm lucky and i shoot in places that aren't overshot. Maybe they are not used that much in your area Motty? But by the looks of how much shooting you do I doubt that's the case. I'm all for the magnet and never leave home without it, but the placement of it some days can be crucial and other days you can put it anywhere and they go mad for it. I find birds reaction to it varies from one extreme to another and sometimes moving it by just a few yards can make all the difference. I have to confess that my first year of using a magnet was fruitless to a point I thought it was junk.
zipmiester
So so far are you saying persist with it ? I rekon I'll give it another go OK next question ,dead birds or fake?
kyska
I use one, and to be honest it seems that it stops the birds committing to the pattern but it certainly draws them off a line to get them in shooting distance. Make sure you don't block the 'run way' for them to land into the mouth of the pattern.
filzee
I'v had good and bad shooting using a magnet. I generally always use dead birds on mine as i keep a few in the freezer and get them out the night before. I don't think there is a right or wrong place to put it as its all trial and error. Last time I went out i had the magnet in front of me with a few decoys either side and they were coming close but not committing. I changed the pattern slightly and put the magnet off to the left and they started screaming in and managed a good bag. Persist with it and if its not working try it somewhere else. Good luck

chrisrob2804
I use a magnet more or less all the time unless I cant get a couple of birds, I used to put the magnet at the back and had the same problem until an older gentleman made me aware that the pigeons when coming into decoy have to fly over it to get into the pattern which spooks them, I then started putting it at the front of the pattern and the pigeons commit no probs, depending on the day of course. try that and see,

markyboy
I'm having great results with my magnet just now !
The Ghost
This would seem about right, (found online) I often use two magnets. The bottom picture was the last time I was out with Fenny, it shows a hare coming to have a look at the magnet that was spinning...not bothered one bit it sat for ages.
