cody123
Hi Guys, Ive been asked by a mate to fit a new spring and seal kit to an old BSA Meteor. The spring is an "OX" spring which I duly fitted, everything was lubed and re-assembled. But on trying the gun the trigger release pressure is way too high. My question is ....is the spring too powerful ? Help please !!
BSA-airgunner
Yep the ox spring will do more harm than good in the meteor...
Theskyfox
I used to have a BSA Meteor many years ago. Nice little rifle, but they are classed as "junior" rifles for general plinking, and aren't full power. I traded mine in for a HW95k. Can't imagine it'd be worth putting a Ox spring in... -Andrew
mickyh
An Ox spring will spoil any rifle. And they put them over the legal limit (most times). They are for Chavs who think they need massive power. Many a good gun ruined by an Ox spring ! Edited July 26, 2013 by mickyh
twitchynik
My .22 Airsporter was ruined by one. Much harder to cock (as if the underarm mechanism made it easy in the first place..!) and the extra thwack it gave when fired wasn't great either. The things you do when in your yoof.... Underdog
I have used them but trim them untill they are nice. I just stick with standard springs and get polishing now. May make a spring guide now n' then. U.

NIGHT SEARCHER
Have a look at www.airgunpellet.co.uk they do 4 makes of springs OX.TITAN. from £10 to £14. They do spring guides and piston weights and pellets all at very good prices.
cody123
Thanks guys, wish I had know this before buying the bloody thing !!
Anth6568
The sear will break very soon due to the strength if the Ox. Go with the original spring as others have suggested. Should be putting out around 8ft/lbs.
cody123
Cheers guys, The gun is just for his grandson to plink with, I've decided I'm going to cut the ox spring back & see how we go!

cody123
Thanks to all who gave info. regarding this problem with the old Meteor. In the end I had to remove SIX coils from the spring to get the gun operating properly. Can't help but wonder why this info is not on the spring packaging ?? Thanks again. Theskyfox
First gun I ever owned....happy days ! Same here . Owned it for about 7 years before eventually trading it towards a HW95k. Still got £75 for it too! -Andrew
secretagentmole
The Meteor is not a junior rifle! It does have a full sized stock but it is a medium powered gun unless you get one of the latest (mark 6 or 7) models which are full powered! Not the best rifle in the world but for a host of us (who can remember Kays and Grattans catalogues) it was the first airgun we ever owned or shot! Owned by many with rosy eyed mentality (got a Super Meteor Mark 4) and kept as a reminder of days gone by! brett1985
if you spend a bit of time, love and affection on a meteor you will get a good result. my last meteor build was running 11.2ftlb consistently and had hardly any recoil... welshwarrior
Fitted an ox to my supersport as a kid sounded a great plan it led to sear breaking that meant when cocking it regularly released the spring as I was closing the barrel. The barrel would fly up hurt my hand and bent the barrel after a few days. Ruined my first brand new gun I ever owned.
malantone
I fitted an ox spring to my HW35 about 34 years ago, I often take rabbits at 30 + yards with it and apart from a new seal it has never gone wrong.
