I'm after a fun car , just been looking in the auto trader and there's so many to choose from can anyone advise me on what type to choose from and what to look out for , I've got about 6k to spend. I know quite abit about cars but the thing I'm concerned about with the boxster is the roof, cambelt and gearbox . Advice please :good:

The are a lot of fun, but on the cheaper/older cars the bills can be eye watering, A very complex design and some flawed engineering make them a costly proposition as they age. Buy something else for 6k,MX5 Bmw or TT etc. Its very easy to run up 1500 bills as have found out recently as an ex Porsche owner.Porsche parts prices are a joke even if you use an indy for maintainence.

Get the 3.2 with a 1 owner from new.

Edit

This weather won't last. Buying any convertible now will come at a premium.

You'd be better buying a 4x4 now (RS4, RS6 or Cayenne) and outing that for profit come winter and icey roads and then buying a convertible when there's snow on the ground.

With any older £6k-esque fun car go for low miles and low owners and be fussy. 'Fun' means big bills when they go wrong.

A few years ago I did discs and pads on a boxster 3.2 at the garage i worked at. Parts alone from Porsche were £950. Expect parts to astronomical for anything slightly exotic like that.

Have a look a bmw M5's. they start at about 5k on auto trader. 400bhp and rear wheel drive, but as with anything fast parts are always expensive but it should be fairly reliable and certainly fun.

E39 M5 will be a lot of fun and very practical, even cheaper 540i sport.

I've had my 911RS for 10 years now and parts are not expensive if you know where to go. Example-Disc and pads all round bought for £280 and fitted for £100 at my garage (Berlyn Services). Having said that, the water cooled cars are expensive when engine or gearbox issues occur. I would not recommend a £6k Porsche! Having driven a lot of cars, if it was my money I would go with a Honda s2000 which in my opinion are the best sensible, fun, two seater convertible for that money.

Don't even think about a 6K Porsche. The most expensive Porsche you buy will be the cheapest one you own, trust me.

For 6K go for something more modern and easier on the garage bills. Audi TT is a cheaper route.

Besides if you buy a Boxster you are still always going to want a 911.

Have to agree with the wanting a 911 but for me they stopped making the 911 when they stopped the air cooled cars in 1996. A new 911 will costs you the earth to service, insure etc and they plummet in depreciation. A 1990-1996 model (964 or 993) are good value and currently appreciating, cost £250 a year to service and on classic car insurance around £150 for a 5k per annul mileage policy.

The S2000 is a wicked car and great fun on and off the track. They are easily chippable without having to upgrade brake, breathing or exhaust packages.

Thanks for all the input so far , I did look at the S2000 but I still prefer the boxster , yes some of the die hard Porsche fans say its a poor mans 911 but it's just for abit of fun for my day off, i'd be lucky if I drive it twice a month ,as its not going to be a day to day car 6k is better than 60k to spend ;)

For pure fun what about a seven replica kit?simple everyday mechanics slingshot performance and gokart handling without £300 foot wide tyres, peanuts insurance and ideal for a day out at oulton or donnington.

I have a Caterham with a Fireblade engine, seriously quick and you can rev the nuts off it. I go this after I sold the TVR Sagaris as it was a total money pit and so unreliable.

Audi 225bhp quatro cabriolet, fun in the summer, fun in the winter as its a 4wd , easy peasey to drive and very difficult to loose on a corner , brilliant little cars with a decent Bose sound system , get a BMW and you will be going nowhere when it snows !

agree about going nowhere in a BMW when it snows but Audi tts come across as hairdressers cars ( my opinion ) :)

Was about to suggest that you are consulted as a 911 owner Rupert!

Good suggestion. Bro in law built a Tiger. Can also recommend an MX 5 they are great fun and cheap to run.

MX5's are too slow and are *the* hairdressers' car.

If the spec is £6k and used once a month in the dry then any Westfield derivative. Don't bother with Lotus or TVR unless you are looking to spend more time with your local AA representative.

I'd get £5k in folding and roll 2 lots of £500 into 2 separate pockets and then go and bid on this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201305246922609/sort/default/usedcars/model/m3/make/bmw/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/page/1/keywords/1%20owner/radius/1500/postcode/cm31bg?logcode=p

In summer, people are paying off holidays and not buying cars - it's a great time to get a 4x4 for cash - I'd wait till winter to buy a convertible

EDIT

Reliable, known quantity, not outrageous to keep on the road if you go non main dealer and fast enough to scare you.

Unlike the 2 seater joke go carts suggested, it's even practical to a point.

Use it, abuse it and you will still always get £4.9k for it in a hurry all day long (as we say in Essex).
