Sean Richo
I know it's probably unlikely but has anybody ever trained a jack russell to retrieve shot pigeons. Got a terrier that will retrieve anything I throw for it and is not gun shy at all does anybody think I will be able to train it to retrieve shot birds from a hide. If so any ideas? I know it's not ideal but could it be possible?
Sheldon Cooper
Never done it but they are smart dogs. Mine knows every thing. Saw one skate boarding on tv once so pigeons should be easy lol

fenboy
Ghost has been training his Shih tzu up with some success , I dont think it will ever reach trialing standard though He has bet me £10 that he can get it to do a water retrieve on a goose , money in my bank I think ! The Ghost
The Shih Tzu training has gone very well, pigeon are no problem at all unless they are dead.....she has a toy one that she will blind retrieve without any problem at all. She is 'a little bit gun shy' and will run home if a shotgun goes off....not bad with an air rifle if it is moderated....hope your dog is better. It's the wifes dog but I have entered it for Britain's Got Talent this year once it can pull a goose out of the water...she can walk on her hind legs....the dog that is the wifes always been able to do that. Yes it can be done your Jack Russell can be as good as my Shih Tzu....Fenboy helped me loads with advice I remember he said "poor gundogs are due to bad trainers" he was able to sell me an old pair of his Nike Classics and things have been better ever since....best £120 I ever spent Edited August 2, 2013 by The Ghost

Hi Had my old JR put down in January she was 14 but in her lifetime she retrieved pheasant partridge pigeon rabbits and even a pricked duck off our flight pond, her replacement is 13 weeks old and is retrieving old socks up to now. The old one was very good but her one fault was everything she retrieved she had to make sure it was dead so it always got a good shaking first Geordie

The Ghost
Oh that's so funny Ghost, made me laugh! Why? I don't understand the Welsh, we are very different nations bigbird. England's relationship with Wales is based on trust and understanding..... they don't trust us and we don't understand them.

vulpicide
My meg is fourteen now and retired but she retrieved pigeons and I also used her at Scone in the gundog scurry to show a guy what His lab should do. He looked a trifle embarrased after I told him that it was the first time she'd tried it.
ditchman
i was told a story by a headkeeper a while ago........he accompanied his boss ( a woman) to scotland in her private jet every year as a loader when double gunning on the grouse, and she had 2 jack russells retriving, and a good job they did , as they could get under the heather to find runners.......... gazbev
Very hard mouthed terriers are in my experience,I had a border that would go after a pricked bird and bring it back after it had shook it to death and his teeth had met, never interested in dead ones there always had to be a kill involved to get some interest, always reluctant to give it to me though, but great company terriers are. Having said that walked up shooting with him with the wind in our face he was mustard at putting up birds

He has absolutely no interest in things that are already dead though...but I have my idiot cocker for them!
rustybucket
My jack will retrieve rabbits and smaller foxes (dragged back) but there's something about feathers that send her wild and will rag them
oscarsdad
I went for a run yesterday morning and took the terrier with me...we ran past a hedge and a pigeon popped out right in front of him at head height and he caught it and ragged it around in the road! I had to take it off him and dispatch it and then leave it in the ditch as I couldn't really carry out my run carrying a mangled dead woody!
