the enigma
How long should a sak mod last on an hmr? I've got one on my 22" barrelled CZ, and recently I think that it's started to get a bit louder. I've shot about 700 rounds through it, and although the baffles are showing some signs of deterioration, it's nothing major. What sort of shot count is normal? Cheers Davey
Dougy
Got rid of mine on my hmr because it started to show signs of burning up, swapped it for an ase utra. They are more expensive but its been on the hmr now for nearly 9 years.

Dekers
Last time I saw any figures from Jackson Rifles they quoted 10,000 rounds on HMR and WMR for the SAK. If it breaks it has a lifetime warranty/exchange for any fault at 60% or retail price, so you can replace them forever at far less than the cost of some mods original purchase price. I have SAK on both my .22lr's and my WMR, my HMR is on it's second Sirocco, replaced under warranty by Edgar Bros when the first melted, when that dies my HMR will get a SAK as well. Everyone has an opinion and a view, I make no suggestion the SAK is the best mod in the market but it does for me!
njc110381
I put a fair few .22 Hornet rounds through mine before I burnt it out. It will last ages on a HMR - certainly a lot more than 700! It didn't get louder when you cleaned it by any chance? I found mine used to work best with a bit of muck in it? I figured it dulls the vibrations or something? the enigma
Thanks for the replies lads. I put a fair few .22 Hornet rounds through mine before I burnt it out. It's just that I just checking zero with some new ammo today, fired 10 shots and my ears were ringing a bit......... something that's never happened before with the hmr Edited August 13, 2013 by the enigma
malkiserow
That looks like accelerated wear for 700 rounds....... Give the importer a call. They are really nice people.

It's just that I just checking zero with some new ammo today, fired 10 shots and my ears were ringing a bit......... something that's never happened before with the hmr Thise baffles look exactly like what I experienced. Mine was on my CZ452 in .17HMR - but I had the barrel cut down from 20" to 16" which I think was a contributary factor to the baffles burning. Once they start to burn they are likely to get worse progressivelt quicker. As has been said Jackson Rifles will replace it at about 60% of the normal price! That's why I was surprised to see that amount of wear, considering that it's on a 22". Thanks once again for all the replies, I'll give Jackson's a call. njc110381
Yeah that's messy - certainly far worse than I expected it to be. Needs a clean too!
bicykillgaz
Maybe worth trying a sako mod their a bit longer than sak's but IMO quieter on my .22lr, not sure if they can be used hmr though so would need to check.
dadioles
I had a SAK on my 14" barrel Anschutz HMR and found the baffles were being quite badly corroded. I could not guess how many shots were fired through it but over the course of a year I got through two SAK's. Maybe 1000 shots, just a guess, could be a lot more. It is the thinner part, the knife-like edge, that goes first. I reckon it gets pretty hot in there with a short barrel. Nothing like the same effect with my .22subs which is what the SAK was designed for. I now use DM80's and do not experience the same problem. A longer barrel must help protect the moderator to some extent as the flames and gases will have cooled and reduced in pressure a bit more before they get to it. Logically, well maybe?, as the holes in the SAK (it is already oversize for the hmr) get bigger due to corrosion it is likely to be less effective (louder). Despite switching to DM80 I am still a fan of SAK and happily recommend them for both .22 subs and .17 hmr which is all I have regular experience of.
