evo
hi all, does anyone know if it is legal to shoot on a campsite if you have been given permission by the land owner when people are camping on it,ie if you are using sub12ftlb air rifles and are the other end of the field and shooting away from the campers in their tents ? if people are camping does this mean you would be shooting in a public place or is it ok to control rabbits using night vision whilst people are asleep in their tents ? I am just asking as I have been asked to control the rabbits on a campsite because they are out of control or should I wait until no-one is on the field because the guy has said just go onto the campsite and shoot them, now I,m not stupid concerning safety and backstops etc and I am a very careful shooter but was just wondering if it was legal to shoot the land whilst campers are on it please note,,i would always think safety first but the land owner is desperate to sort this problem out before someone breaks an ankle because there are that many holes all over the land
malkiserow
Have you thought about long netting? If there are no dogs about
evo
that's something I havn,t thought about to be honest, the guy that owns the land has said to shoot them but I did mention the use of ferrets but the land is just not right to put the nets out as 60% of where the rabbits have their burrows is covered with gorse so you cant even get near some of the entrances, as soon as it goes dark they appear in droves and are everywhere but there is was to many burrows to cover with nets and looking at it I don't think a long net would be workable
spanj
This sounds like a load of hassle ! Wait til camping season is over (its not that far off)..................
Bleeh
Jesus christ, you are setting yourself up for nothing but headache, blackeyes, police escorts and annoyed land owners.I'm an open minded chap, but even I'd be furious if I found out that someone had been shooting around my tent as I'd been sleeping, even more so if I had kids with me. I'd be asking for my money back and I'd be leaving.Wait till the campsite is empty and then shoot it, give it a couple of months for winter and you'll be fine. You want clear ground between where they live and where they feed...... Go on a dark night when the wind does not take your smell over them........ No ferrets. Get a mate to go further out than walk them to the burrows!!!!

rimfire4969
You are doing the right thing by waiting. I now and again have to shoot something in our site (last thing was a rta fox dragging both back legs) and I do get asked a lot of questions but generally people understand. When we do not have so many people around a might shoot a bunny early morning for the pot. Rabbits here get so tame as people are always about that shooting them in October is very easy until they wise up, but I can hit their numbers very hard by then. stokie
If he's adamant he wants them doing now . I would barrier the area off with hazard tape on poles and put up signs saying shooting/ pest control keep out . Campers tend to like seeing cute bunnies running around as they think it brings them closer to nature. I'd also be tempted to wait a few weeks til it's out of season

vulpicide
Evo you might consider joining a shooting organisation BEFORE you start you may need the insurance .
dadioles
It is not a legal issue, if you judge it to be safe and have the landowners permission (I would want it in writing!) blast away. BUT...... Common sense has to prevail. You need to be absolutely discreet, the invisible man. Unhappy campers means lots of grief. I shoot .22lr (rabbits) on a council owned wildlife park but only around 2am when everyone is tucked up in bed. Keep it absolutely legal and if no-one sees you then no-one gets upset or causes any problems.
stubby
if as you say they are everywhere of a night, walk out a long net between them and the burrows, no need to ferret
telf
i have a caravan site where the rabbits come off some old railway lines onto the nice grass drive which is about half a mile long before you get to the site, but dont bother going until the site is closed in november as its a bit off putting when your coming back from the pub to see somebody walking about with a gun, plus i use the .22 lr,if i were you id leave it till its closed for the season Edited August 14, 2013 by telf
