Nothing illegal in that dude.

Is that biker law paul?

what is classed as hogging the middle lane ?? there must be some rules that say your hogging or not ? or is it just left to plod to decide (wallet filler)

Rule of thumb is if theres space in the left lane then use it (unless you're going to get stuck behind a Norbert and have to crank it back out in half a mile).

I think you can undertake when say the middle lane slows down and the inside lane speeds up

Or if the road ahead is clear and you just keep to your lane pass on the inside and dont do anything stupid like pull out infront of the middle lane hogger

I presume this only works on motorways that are fairly clear because that won't work on M25 where much of the time all three lanes are full and what happens when you leave a good gap between you and the car in front and some knobhead jumps in between you?

so when your banging down a motorway at night in the pitch black with very few cars on the road do you hog the left lane or drive in the others....i drive in the outside or middle as the amount of fox's and badgers at the side of the left lane is silly round nr mine. so middle and out for me and ill have less chance of running charley over in the verge's

Thats fair do's, heavy traffic messes it all up.

As for the latter, i have no problem doing it but there is that ring tightening moment as you pass through said lane hogs blind spot!! Closely followed by the eyes right and obligatory head shake (as demonstrated by bikers as they pass the volvo estate that just nigh on killed them)

don't worry about the new law, david and his crew have ensured there's not enough cops about to enforce it.

Very true. I do Leeds to near London almost every week and most times I do not see a marked traffic car. In answer to EMcC, this isn't about speed limits, it's about obeying the rules of the road. People may choose to go faster or their speedo may read differently to others.

I had the same issue this morning on the M606. A chap in lane 2 was at the speed limit, lane one was empty and had been for at least half a minute so I went down the inside. He flashed at me but still did not pull over.

If in the middle of the night and nothing else on roads what harm in driving in the middle lane, if anything untoward happened like a blow out you have entry of road to come to a safe stop.

Even When motorway is busy is the third lane not for over taking

On two lane motorways I agree if hoarding the fast lane when slow lane is empty, birch the fools and teach them some manners.

Years ago when working away on my way to South Wales on motorway after midnight and no other traffic on road I'm going along about 85 mph. Seen some lights behind me thought nothing of it, untill I went under a overhead light looked behind and seen it was a traffic copper. Cack thought I , I'm nabbed I slowed down and he passed me and turned off at next junction. I thought few sigh of relief he's gone and I'm ok,carried on at speed limit in middle lane, the copper came down the on ramp back on motorway overtook me and put up on rolling red sign in back window use inside lane not middle lane, as soon as I Indictated and moved to middle lane he flashed his hazzards and sped off.

Just shows how they want you in the right lane regardless how quiet the roads.

Been driving 25 years and had no idea when three lanes your still supposed to stay in inside lane.

Its been said before and I agree-if I'm doing 70 in the middle lane then anybody who is being held up by me intends to break the law by speeding. There are thousands of idiots driving dangerously on the motorways already-if you force them to overtake frequently then you are asking for trouble.

The argument for "if I'm doing 70 no one should overtake me" is poor, the reason being the 70 on your car may read differently to someone else's, also the rules of the road say drive on the left. By the same logic would you ignore all other road rules because you are doing what you thiink is the correct speed?

Surely you are missing the point!

If you can move over in to the left hand lane you should, if you fail to do so you are liable to be stopped and awarded a £100:00 fine!

Indeed, but if you always drive in the left lane, you too will be overtaking frequently.

The slow lane is typically full of HGV's. If there are 3 lanes, and the overtaking/fast lane is free - then by all means overtake the person in the middle lane.

how can it be a poor argument? 70 is the limit, end of story. I get sick of these bigheaded types, bombing up behind you flashing their lights even though they are breaking the law, telling you to get out of 'their' way. If you want to drive like Senna, go and live in Germany where 120 is allowed.

There is no such thing as the slow lane. I agree there are lots of HGVs in lane 1 but there are also times where there are significant gaps between said HGVs. As always, it's a matter of using our noddles.

No one is saying hop in and out every few seconds but if you can move over for at least half a minute or longer then ( only in my opinion), you should.

It's nothing to do with being bigheaded, if you have not moved over after 20-30 secs into an obviously clear lane, then you deserve to be flashed or undertaken. You are not a traffic policeman.

i may be wrong, and will happily be corrected, but the way i understand what i have been told by a local pc who is a friend of the family is that realistically you will generally only run into trouble from mr policeman for lane hogging if your sat in the middle lane causing an obstruction when the left lane is clear.

in all honesty, i can understand it if mr policeman fines someone when he see's a clear left hand lane, and that person is sat in the centre lane and people are having to pull into the right hand lane to overtake.

if your in the centre lane and not causing an obstruction and no-one else is around, then i think a fine would be unjust.

then, and only then, would you have grounds for an appeal in court.

just my opinion however.
