WelshAndy
I have never seen a Canada looking like that, I cannot say it is or isn't for that reason alone I shouldn't have shot. I have been studying the bird books from first post being seen and am still no wiser. Its hard to indentify birds belly up and dead and unnaturally set up I find. I too think white mallards or mongrels should be culled out and as long as they contain Mallard genes all should be 100% legal (I think) the issue is spotting the difference in say a juvey Shell duck and a mongrel mallard, they too can be white underneath and lack the destinctive beak colour. Its a bit of a can of worms really " if you aint 100% positive best not to squeeze the trigger" Our sport is always at risk from mis-identification of legitimate quarry, especially early season. when you take into account the truly unusual visitor turning up the fowler of today needs to err on the side of caution constantly. The consequences could be dramatic Can anyone lead me to proper reference of grey geese interbreeding with black geese? Although I have seen the two mix socially and even young taken on as their own, I have yet to see a genuine cross personally. there was a canada greylag hybrid in one of the skeins we had last year - didnt get a chance to shoot it tho. http://www.gobirding.eu/Photos/HybridGeese.php Edited September 11, 2013 by WelshAndy
Penelope
Interesting link WelshAndy. I think some of the parent descriptions may be a bit off though. there was a canada greylag hybrid in one of the skeins we had last year - didnt get a chance to shoot it tho. http://www.gobirding.eu/Photos/HybridGeese.php

scolopax
It is a very good thing to try and shoot all mallards and greylags with white plumage, as it indicates cross breeding with domestic stock. We have a few greylag x canada locally, plus the occasional barnacle x canada and barnacle x greylag. We have up to 600 'feral' Barnacle on the estuary which share the breeding sites with canada's and greylags.
scolopax
Had my 'September 1st' on Tuesday morning. Great to be back out again, a nice number of geese around but they stayed wide of me, managed to call in three wigeon (with a mallard call) and knock down a cock bird for my first bird of the season, I also missed a teal at twenty foot with two shots on 3½" mammoth 1's, probably a good thing I did not connect! Apart from that ducks were generally few and far between, three or four little lots of wigeon looking fresh in, and some bunches of mallard which flighted inland when it was barely breaking dawn. Penelope
No had my '1st' yet, no dog means no fowling. Hopefully I may get a chance at a duck or goose in October after beating on my dad's shoot for the day.

lister1
I'll be out Saturday and hopefully Sunday although ive got the footing s to dig for my extention and a frame for my garage that needs welding and etc etc etc. Wildfowling all weekend it is then! Edit to say. I found the hole in my waders. There is a tear in the sole of the boot. Ive tried some glue but not sure it will hold. I cant afford a new pair so could be a cold footed winter. Get enough glue on it and it'll hold. Maybe a patch glued on from the inside as well?
lister1
Was thinking about a patch from the inside buy I would need to rip the inner sole, so I thouht I would try it just glued from the out side.

figgy
Get a pair of neoprene wader boot socks, if it still leaks a bit you won't notice and your feet will be toasty. Figgy
