sitsinhedges
Was going to suggest the same thing! I've got a Berlingo with some good tyres on. It's great for bumpy dry farm tracks but the problem is that if muddy as soon as the one wheel spins you're stumped.

HDAV
The Rav 4 looks like a 4 seat car by the looks of the back seats as there is not even a lap belt. They have 3 kids below 11yrs old so need a 5 seater. SWB is 2+2 LWB is 5 seater plenty of small 2wd drive cars with reasonable ground clearance Scenic 4x4 RX4 should be ideal http://www.rac.co.uk/buying-a-car/car-reviews/renault/scenic/207586/ Or Kangoo trekka (4x4 Kangoo) http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/used-cars-for-sale/renault/kangoo/renault-kangoo-1.6-16v-trekka-4x4-mpv-5d-1598cc--15556524 There are plenty of 4wd looking 2wd like the Kuga and Evoque (out of current price range) more reasonably priced is the Dacia Sandero stepway http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/dacia/sandero-stepway?utm_source=taboola-internal Edited August 30, 2013 by HDAV
Fisheruk
citroen 2cv.........know a couple of keepers who used to have the van version...good clearance and tall thin wheels that used to penitrate the mud to get a grip on the hard ground beneath....... Yep and a nice soft ride.
Essex Ed
This is what you need.... Proton Jumbuk...bullet proof engine....no frills but very capable and useful vehicle. about 1200 1500 second hand Otherwise a Fiat Panda 4 X 4 are incredibly capable small 4 x 4's How many of these do you see on the road? Exactly, because they're ****!
Gordon R
bid adam - Fiat Sedici - same vehicle as Suzuki SX4. The Fiat diesel can be 2WD or the 4 x4 version. We have owned a Sedici, but my wife now runs an SX4 - petrol auto. At 70mph, the engine is turning over at less than 2500 revs. Very economical, decent ground clearance - something like 1/2" less than a Freelander. Surprisingly under-rated vehicles. Far better build quality than a Qashqai for little over half the price. Holds the road like a leech and the best brakes you are likely to come across. Plenty of room for four adults and boot isn't bad at all.
ehb102
Deeply uncool, but my Ford Fusion is coping well with getting into and out of a lot of fields. It's the same length as a Focus but is a much better 5 seater. It's ride height is apparently a little higher, making it popular with the older folks who like something not too low to get into. I don't know if you can even buy them any more though. Shame. It's like a mini Volvo. Seats down and I can get loads of stuff in the back.
