Highlander
Yesss the weather has finally turned. Cold and frosty this last couple of days. Unfortunately no wind either but we do have pigeons. 1000's of them and they are hitting the OSR only after just one shot they're drifting away to quieter fields or just tree sitting. The weather pattern this morning looked like snow, a real grey morning with a very heavy frost that stayed white until lunchtime. Now this afternoon a deep red and purple western sky. Forecast is for more of the same but how to get at those pigeons as farmers want them moved.
Paul in North Lincs.
A good week of hard frost is what we need!!!! Its dam fustrating when they'are flocked up; hitting a field and dispersing together after one shot into a neigbouring wood............................its still too mild here..we need a really sharp cold snap.... (mind you, I hear it's minus 5 in Ipswich.......oopS: Sorry) I will be concentrating on the roost shooting this year after the sydicates have finished......I find it a more exiting these days......I have noticed the summer and winter sport over deeks diminishing over the last couple of years.....the warmer winters and 'food a plenty' dosn't help matters
Whitebridges
I had a quick scoot round my patch this afternoon and there are thousands and thousands about. Looked at a lot of OSR and the stuff is so healthy some of it is a foot high. The have been pre-occupied with acorns, mast and berries but all the rich pickings have largely gone. When this high pressure goes and we get some wind and hopefully a contined hard snap the shooting should be fantastic. I walked one roosting wood that is really going to produce once the keeper lets us in there. The national pigeon shooting days are early Feb and given the right conditions they'll be lots to shoot....unless Highlander has nicked all my land , LOl. pin
I'm still new to pigeon shooting but from what I have seen the magnet scares more than it brings in, though I understand this isn't the case in winter?
tosspot
pin i am of the opinion that there is a time and a place for a magnet and admittedly big fields of rape is probably one of them but they are not the be all and end all of pigeon shooting to be used on every occaision i hope Tiercel reads this

The magnet is by no means the magic tool that garantees success. It has its benefits in certain circumstance, and can produce great results in the right conditions......Its all about trial and error. What works well on one day, doesn't neccesarily work on the next.............................& thats the beauty of bluey shooting my friend!!!!!!! pin
Biggest problem I see with machines is this. If they "work" you won't know if the birds were coming anyway
Catamong
Static decoys are very difficult for the woodies to see on winter rape. Rotary's are an absolute must if you want a decent bag. Don't take my word for it - ask Jim Albone - he uses TWO rotary's on rape, with a fast spin speed, no silly speed controllers or other gimmicks. I'm afraid when I go Pigeon shooting I want to shoot Pigeons, not gaze for hours at the beautiful countryside over stone cold barrels, I can do that in a traffic jam on my way to work in St Albans..!! Still no Pigeons on rape in my area, I maintain they won't be around in any numbers until late Jan / early Feb, 'cos there's still masses of acorns in the woods, and why risk getting your backside peppered with a dose of No 6 over the rape fields when there's an abundance of food directly below the trees you are roosting in..?? pin
I've started to see more movement in general recently, but I think you are right it's going to be well into Jan before woody finds the need and desperation to start hitting the rape. Even when he does I think its a case of as many guns as possible to bounce them about, there is that much of it not a lot of reason to hang about if your getting shot at
