gazbev
I an thinking of getting a fourtrak as a second car because Ican get it on classic car insurance, there are a few around the 1500 quid mark and some of them look surprisingly clean. Thing is I know we take a bit of a gamble with the engine but they are supposed to be bomb proof on the fourtrak,I was wondering what to look out for as regards rot underneath or something else that is common with them. I haven't got the money to spend out so if I buy one that needs welding or something serious I'm knackered and in the dog house lol Any advice? nicholiath
I had 2 over the years both coming up to third time around the clock and engines still fine but bodywork underneath really does suffer if not looked after.
paul99
Rotten sills is the only thing that's gone wrong with ours - only an MOT failure if it's within 30cm of a seat belt mount etc but if the rest of the vehicle is fine it's worth repairing. mcleod
As said before. Great trucks but poor underneath! Hope you find a good un or learn to weld. Mcleod
Lord Geordie
Didn't they have a prob with the rear springs too?
jimboblincs2
Sill rot is an issue, and you can only buy part of the panel, so you need to check all body panels. Gearbox went on mine also, went from a growl to a large bang and unable to shift gears. Fitted second hand box and it wouldn't disengage 4 wheel drive, vacuum system faulty, then some scumbag tried nicking it, cocked the immobiliser up, written off. andypaint
Rot on sills, floor behind front seats, boot floor, rear arch on the inside. Ive had three and still got one. Cracking motor with some at2 grabbers on.
al4x
Didn't they have a prob with the rear springs too? no idea mine broke a spring over the years but the independants are coil and you ca change them in half an hour. As said good trucks and very good mechanically just check well it isn't rotten, sills, mountings and boots near the wheel arches are the common places
bornfree
A couple of my mates have them and the main problems have been gear/transferboxes
Axor
Big End went in mine, but it is still one of the best 4x4's I have ever owned, always did what I wanted it to

Glensman
the spring carrier arm is weak at the front bush. If it's being used for serios off roading they can snap. You can see if its bad by getting down on 1 knee...
bobt
we had one as a farm runabout, it was so rotten we hit a pothole and the screen fell out.
weedraker
I have a few..... Mega trucks, i have much fun taking the pee out of the LR boys, and they know I'm right! As said rust is the main killer. Sills; inner and outer, worst at the rear. Also the rear corners of the floor, sort of under the front of the rear seats. Also the outer seams of the boot floor. All easy to check for. The independents will have rusty arches under the plastic.
