thepasty
you think a BMW brings Kudos?! They havent done that for 20 years! Now they represent sales reps, chavs, blokes still living with their parents, middle management boredom and every over road user will look at you and think "c0ck"... You get more exclusivity from a Mondeo these days..... and thats fact. Anyone who knows about cars knows that Subaru's are up with the best of the rest... not because of its badge (important to the shallow) but because they are fantastic motors. By exclusivity you mean the 3 series( the mondeo's main competition) has outsold the mondeo for another year AGAIN, because its such a better car in every aspect. And this comes from someone who used to work at ford and owns a 3 series.
four-wheel-drive
In the end they are not meant to be driven off road they are made for people who have the money and want a car that looks like it would be good off road not to actually drive it off road also as people always say having some good AT/Mud tyres will help most 4x4s to drive in the mud having said that even new Defenders only seem to come with road tyres fitted what is that all about. It is so that they are more economical on the 'official' CO2 measurements. That makes a big difference in some markets ... but that would be an entirely different thread alltogether, and would probably end up crashing the PW forums
Blackbart
The x3 is a decent motor as long as you dont go daft and expect it to go anywhere just cos it says "4x4" .They are very good to drive on the road but limited off due to the tyres (as any 4x4 is) about 40 to the gallon and pretty nippy with it. I had one for 2 year and never had a single problem.

BMW are driven by accountants, PA's and "contractors" Still say CR-V is one of the best grassy bank cars....... Along with RAV4
WinchesterDave
As some one mentioned earlier, the VW Tiguan 4 motion is quite good! My dad has had his for two years now and although 99% it's been used for motorway and road driving, the past two years going to Northern france has found it being Taken down some French farmers tracks which have had a decent amount of 'somme' mud on and it didn't faulter. Admittedly we did come to some bits and thought it's not worth it and found our selves reversing but what we did do it never got stuck and did pull us out of some sticky stuff even on road biased tires. A down side to it I would say would be ground clearance and a not very good approach angle, but it does have a decent four wheel drive system with quite a tourqey engine. It'd be worth a look at if you are in the market for smallish 'luxury' 4wd with good eeconomy! Hope this helped. Dave
The Lawn Ranger
So in my quest for a 4wd that has good mpg i am now looking at a BMW X3, 2 litre diesel, i thought this could be it but i have read a lot of people have had turbo problems with them, two grand to put right if it goes. I am looking at an 07- 10 model, any one got or had one. Thanks Chris Hi, I had an X3 for 4 years and it was a fantastic car, 45 mpg on a run and easily 40 around town. In my syndicate there are Discoveries, Xtrail, Patrol, Shogun, Hi-Lux and when In convoy between drives the BMW kept up with them all no problem. The tyres were bog standard and may I add so was everything else. I changed it nearly 2 years ago for an L200 crew cab and it's the worst car decision I have ever made in terms of off road capability. The only thing is that they are a little tight for space in the boot if there are a few people + dogs but I'd definitely have another tomorrow (if I could claim the VAT back lol) Hope this helps!
