Hi guys n gals,

I'm thinking about the idea of having a night vision setup on my .17hmr and I'm not that clued up on the subject so I was hoping some of you may be able to shed some light on the subject so to speak, I would like to have a set up that I will also be able to use during the day with out having to mess around, I have done a bit of looking online and like the idea of a single unit rather than a diy setup, a friend has a diy setup and even though it is a superb setup I'm not keen on the idea of having components exposed to the elements i.e.: camera and screen ect.

I do like the look of the Pulsar N550 but the price is a bit much for my pocket at the moment so something similar would be nice but when it comes to ir illuminators and specs of it I am getting lost on the whole subject.

Any help will be appreciated :good:

You won't need a doubler nor nm800 for HMR ranges with a Photon - which saves roughly 50%.

Two of my 501b IR conversions this week have been for people who got a bum steer towards the nm800 which just washed out the image. It's totally over the top for the Photon.

Hi mate,if you want a fantastic NV unit then I would highly recommend the Starlight Archer Gen 3 unit.Ok it's not cheap but you pay for quality and this is quality!!

I can honestly say having this NV set-up has transformed my shooting immensely to the point that I wouldn't be without it now.

Aye, Jeff, Rob and I were out on sat eve with a pair of archers, with the ir on it they would pick up a fox at distances I wouldn't like to shoot with the 243 in the dark, clear quality image too

Back out again this week

If you read the OP's thread Money is a slight problem and talk of Gen 3s is totally out of the question

Whilst we would all like a PVS14 and DSA or an Archer for the price of a gen 1 it would be nice...

So back to the dilemma in question, best solution for a budget

What would be the total build cost of say the Watec ??

A diy digi add on that doesn't use a scope mounted screen is entirely possible, but I will admit, to get one made isn't exactly five minutes work either if you're starting from scratch.

The nm800 is a great host but to get the best from it will require a better dimming system than the on board three modes. Again, it's tinkering time.

For your budget I would say the photon or a used n750 is the best bet. There does seem to be some very variable reviews of both units though.
