Mentalmac
Hi Guys, Silly question here - most of my shooting is done with airgun/HMR or the occasional day on pigeons with decoys etc... When I walk up to some of the larger trees in the wood on my shoot (only a tiny wood) a good 100 fly out of the woods. (Often then scaring any rabbits off!) Would it be unsporting to walk up to the trees so they fly out and take a couple? Also, for roost shooting, do you sit outside the wood (hedge before it) with a hide and shoot them as they fly in? sorry for stupid questions, but my opinion tells me any question is worth at least asking. cheers, Chris
.philmypower.
Hi Chris, not a stupid question. It would be fine to pop a few off as they leave the woods and as for roost shooting I've allways had more luck in the wood but if the wood is small and you will get more in a hide near by then I'd say give that a try. Whatever works really. When I go rough shooting I often shoot pigeons that leave the trees. Not as easy as you might think, they will normally see you before you see them Good luck
ditchman
during the summer i will take the dog (or one of them) and my bolt action 410 out for a stroll around the woods and hedges....with the idea that a pigeon or two may drop out of one of the trees when im walking by....they are usually fairly close hence the 410....and round the hedges the dog might put out a rabbit....its the type of evening where there is nothing on telly ...the chores are done and you go out for a wander in jeans and a tee shirt and a few cartridges in your pocket...then down to the pub on the way back.. Mentalmac
Cheers guys, .philmypower. - guess they will fly the opposite way of the tree so hard to get a shot off. Perhaps when I next go I'll head toward the tree out of sight and hope a few come my way when they make off. Ditchman - sounds like a nice idea actually, can see myself doing that more often. Not too greedy, even 1 pigeon would be my dinner that night let alone a few. Shame I haven't got a dog at the moment. Then again, my 9 year old step daughter loves picking up. Never really done rough shooting but want to get into it. Cheers guys for your help, appreciate it
GingerCat
I'd get in among the trees before the pigeons get there and pick them off as they come in to roost. Happy hunting.
stubby
Would it be unsporting cheers, Chris if you read the terms of the general license, wood pigeons cannot be shot for "sporting reasons" but only for pest control so yes it maybe unsporting as some like to put it, to shoot pheasants out of a tree, but pigeons, that'll be a no
bruno22rf
I wouldn't shoot as they leave cos none of them are likely to return for a long time-they are not daft. If they are there then its for a reason and that reason will pull them back-walk them off and hope that they return in small groups-only my opinion mind. Let them go and they may not return at all.

I agree. walk them out of the wood then set up and shoot them as they return to roost, better still get there before the pigeons start to come in to roost. I shoot a cpl of woods I have about once a fortnight, any more than this and you will spoke them and they wont return. As for where to shot them from, thats up to you. I like to set up on the edge of the wood and shoot them as they fly in, but there is nothing wrong in getting under the trees they are roosting in and shooting them there. filzee
I have access to three woods all quite close to each other. We tend to set one person up in each wood before they start to come into roost. Its great fun stood in the trees waiting for them to come in. With a bit of wind we tend to ping-pong them from one wood to the next. I have tried being on the outside of the wood but they change the direction they come in so often its hard to get it right. Good luck and enjoy it
