blasterjudd
Well went out first light but weather was so bad the hide virtually blew away and got a soaking ! Saw thousands again all flying around the woods but would not flight onto the rape at all. Few on the maize but we will not get on their until we have finished shooting the pheasants and chopped it. Roll on Roosting in February perhaps we can finally get at them then ? Only bright side is they are in the North Essex area at last....... kitchrat
Hi m2tyj Good news for you they are only just down the road from you in Stebbing / Great Saling area so will give it a go but dont wanna miss too many lol .... I have lots of perms in that area and towards Dunmow and it's one cold day and all looks good, then it warms up and they are all gone again. Are you one of these landowners that see a few dozen and call it 1000's??? Then, when I am setting up you fire off loads of rockets to spoil my day, even though we have arranged it all with you the day before? blasterjudd
Sorry to dissappoint you but we dont use rockets over here but the adjacent farmer does! Dont like rockets they only scare the birds when set off rest of the time the birds feed with no fear at all. Also sorry to advise our woods are full of woodies in their 1000s and building up.with too much rape round here this year. But i bet we wont get many until february as they are not keen to decoy! kitchrat
Where have they all gone then? I've just spent my Xmas morning looking in just that area, a few here and there and some sitting in trees but nothig to get excited about. Did shoot 10 on rape though but it started quiet and died away quickly, hence the search.... Seasons greetings all....
blasterjudd
Pretty sure they are in conifer strips at the moment flying in and out on massive flocks Still not feeding properly on the rape, probably cos its too wet for them! In our part they are dropping in the flattened maize to feed. We shall be out at the weekend to see if the rotary draws them out? Seasons greetings to u too Edited December 26, 2013 by blasterjudd
kitchrat
Yes, I've seen several groups on flattened maize cover or other game feeders but of course that's no use to us for another 5 weeks or so..... Whenever it's a bit colder they seem to be starting on rape but the weather never lasts and it's back to square 1. THINK COLD/SNOW!!
Catamong
THINK COLD/SNOW!! Snow is the last thing you want if you want to shoot decent bags over rape. The birds get snow blind, as a result they often ignore the decoys and if the snow is thick enough they simply sod off elsewhere or sit in the hedgerows eating Ivy berries. Cat. bobby dazzler
Shot a good few decent bags of pigeons in the snow and bring on the colder weather to finish the beech mast acorns and berries of by this rate the pigeons won't be on the rape till spring
Bigstu84
Shot a few pigeons just north of chelmsford the other day, just walking round the woods - the birds were all full of maize and beans. No rape or acorns in the crop.
blasterjudd
We finish pheasants early mid Jan so only 3 weeks to go then into the woods we go....... That's nay a hard and fast rule. Have had some cracking sport on rape parks with differing covers of snow
