I had a complete check up in the summer , when i was suffering from a external ear infection. There is nothin wrong with my hearing or my ears. Unfortunately back in a days, in my army time, ear defenders wasn't really an option, as you have to hear orders, commands and your coleagues, especially in the op theaters. I speak from experience, you can hear and estimate where is gonna land, up 10 ten seconds before impact , the 82mm and 120mm mortars, as well as the infamous 107mm rocket... trust me you don't want ear defenders...

Glad the tests went well and all is ok. No I guess not, couldn't begin to imagine what that must be like and with a bit of luck I'll never find out ;-)

I haven't got any beep test done... but i can hear u....

If you didn't have a beep test done then you didn't have a complete check up in the summer.

Get an audiologist to perform the test for you, it only takes 5 minutes, I suspect you might be surprised at the results.

Even though my father was deafened in the war and I'm quite hearing impaired, I can usually see the funny side of a 'deaf' joke. The one big problem with the affliction though is that when severe, many immediately think that the deaf person is stupid. I know my father found that aspect particularly hurtful. Why is it that you don't get the same amount of ridicule if you're blind?

I think it may be to do with the fact that you can see the affliction, if that makes sense, white stick/dark glasses/dog

However with deaf people if from birth, then they also have speech difficulties, wrongly people assume the have learning difficulties,

I cant see how this could have applied to your dad, as I imagine he could speak normally?

Its wrong to assume people are stupid and just shows up peoples ignorances

Shot Weston Wood last Sunday, and followed Chris Childerhouse round, fabulous shooter.

Before shooting every stand he would put a couple foam plugs in his ears and put on his glasses, and as soon has he had finished, put them all back in his pocket, so he's already pretty far gone. towards being deaf.

p.s.

I wear hearing aids!

Because you can have a cute lab......

I jest I work in an industry where hearing damage is common and still down played..... But I don't know anyone who wouldn't wind the clock back 20 years and put some muffs on.... One goose, pigeon, partridge or the rest of your life...... Put some perspective on the subject if you want to hear what's going on put your hand in your pocket and get active protection....

As a young lad, I have been guilty of having the 'I don't need that' attitude. Then I got a dose of tinnitus following a mornings pigeon shooting, that lasted for 8 months!

Luckily it went away, it was one of the worst things I've had to endure!! A persistent high pitched ringing keeping me awake all night!!

Since then I wear defenders for everything BAR wildfowling (although I do wear a hat and scrim that cover my ears). As Big Mat said it's a massive hinderence, not being able to hear wingbeats or bird calls.

Bit jealous yours has gone! I've had my tinnitus for as long as I

can remember lol! I'm 18 started shooting at 15 so thats at least 3 years non stop ringing haha there's always hope it'll go ey.. But always wear ear defence now!

Lost my ear plugs on the second drive of a shoot I was on two weeks backs... Not fired A gUN for over a year without them and boy did it get the tinnitus raging eeven more haha

Hearing protection is compulsory in my line of work so I have no quarms about wearing ear defenders/plugs whilst shooting. I have seen and been to many presentations on the damage that noise can do, so I won't take any risks. I wear hearing protection whilst shooting, mowing the lawn, working with power tools at home and even wear plugs when travelling in London on the Underground. Get some funny looks but it's incredibly noisy down there sometimes.

I don't want to loose my hearing an will do what I can to protect it

Never wore any kind of ear defenders in 20 years of shooting, including 12 years in service and 24 months spent in a very noise polluted area in The Middle East.... Never had any problem, and may be i will, but is down to personal choice. I'm a grown up adult and i wouldn't accept to be told what to do

You are so brave and macho :/

I do not believe that people think of the deaf person as 'stupid', more ignorant. I see people looking at me as though they expect an answer, the problem is, I DID NOT HEAR THE BLOODY QUESTION !!!

I once worked with an ex military guy who had the same views as yourself and he was a Firearms Instructor. His name was Richard Head, but he was best known as "****".

Well, i'm not arguing with you.... :whistling:
