I always have a set of chains and traction boards in the back of my pickup, but I think it could be useful for the wify's car. need some snow though to try it out. Some cars have brake disk guards very close to the wheel rim, just waiting to get pulled off if the rope goes a bit slack and catches them. If you are worried about getting stuck on an icy patch then carry a bucket full of sand, you'll be amazed what it will get you out of.
