Underdog
Some folk on here believe the chamber of a shotgun is where total combustion takes place in the cartridge and no combustion is taking place once the ejecta enters the barrel! I believe the powder once converted to gas does continue to convert some of its energy as heat so is still burning. Some believe the powder needs a specific amount of presure other than static presure from the cartridge closer! How does the powder generate 10000 psi whilst still in powder form in order for it to all convert to gas and then suddenly stop burning??? Some also believe a fibre wad without a nitro card will be totaly destroyed enyet I have developed loads without nitro cards that worked fine. I must of been imagining it! Some say Green dot will burn as clean as a whistle under 36g of shot....yes it does however there is not many 36g loads listed because pressure rises quick with Green dot. Oh and all nitro powders are classed as progressive fuels....otherwise we just have pipe bombs under our arms! U.
sitsinhedges
Some also believe you can stuff pretty much anything into a cartridge and just keep increasing the powder load until it shoots thru a chronograph made of a bean tin. The difference is one has an opinion and the other is a dangerous idiot. That's all I'll be saying on this matter.

kent
its beyond question that powder burns after the chamber, if it adds a great deal to the velocity depends on wad type barrel length and perhaps as much as a dozen other things

Most gunsmiths / gunmakers advise that when purchasing a gun that, the most important place to check in the Bore for wear is 9 inch from the Breech as this is reputed where most of the wear is generated, high temprature "powder burn"!..."not pressure",that does happen in the "chamber". Most plug gauges and more modern clock gauges have a "mark" at 9" on the plug bar that holds the correct size of Bore plug, so you know you have reached the correct area of Barrel, I do some lathe work and made a set of plug gauges and a Bar, so I could check some of the old wildfowling guns, 10g 8g and 4g etc as most gunshops dont have anything bigger than a 12g, so if they have one in their shop they usually cant tell you the amount of wear the gun has had, obviously you can see what the Bore was "stamped" at and then check for wear yourself. best wishes....Dale.
