Dougy
Best thing i can suggest is put yourself in the farmers boots, Ok !!! you may need to give them a clean when you walk on the best carpet but Look at different scenarios, Dinner time you get a knock on the door, Oh dear, not a good time is it, nor any other meal times. You aint going to be happy, thats before your being asked if some strange bloke can come and sit in your field with a gun and shoot things. Emails, well of the loads that farmers get from lord knows who asking if this paper works been done and this bill has been paid, and all other emails they get business related, they get 1 from someone they don,t know and quite possibly ends up in the spam folder with the other 100 or so a week, are you really expecting an offer of shooting they cant judge you from an email i'm afraid. Try and get just one to start, beating is a step in the right direction, as has been suggested, if you like a drink now and again, pick the right pubs, that's all ways a really nice method, get yourself known to people in the right circles. Once you have one ---and do a good job -- ask the neighboring farm, then ask there neighbor and so on, it takes time. When you are old and grey you will have more than you can manage to cover
eccles
As others have said email are a no go. Keep knocking on them doors be polite if nothing doing ask if you could leave your phone number in case they need help in the future . There is land available i'm sure. If you get lucky on a permission and do a good job word will so spread to neighbouring farms. Picked up a lot this way only last year i'd seen a pile of crows on a stubble field, call in to see farmer asked if anyone was shooting his farm gave him my name he said so you are the chap thats been bashing crows locally .. His reply was can't get anyone to shoot crows rabbit etc Terry. This was on a Tuesday morning said i could shoot Thursday morning great go ahead. Shot 221 that morning Roger was well pleased then shot 100+ 129 - 70 + on other 3 visits soon after. Roger asked if i'd like a go anytime on the foxes shot 11 in 4 visits. Has now passed on my number to his other mates. So keep at it mate and good luck on finding some permissions atvb Terry

shanekiely
Which way did you travel to ? Hurley, atherstone of which has the oldest air gun club I'm the country , Nuneaton my mates, cousins shoot a lot of. Tamworth I shoot a lot of as my school mates were farmers sons . The main problem is at the moment the hs2 cuts through a lot including 5 of the farms I shoot. Their is places out there but I'm lucky as I cover a lot of farms the word gets round but theirs no rabbits my way :( Farmers seem happy to have one or two shooters to save problems I went out to fillongley, shustoke, meriden, etc. Will try again tomorrow! Lord Geordie
get yourself some beating and go from there, the doors will open once you are known In Northumberland this seems the most sensible suggestion! I spent years to gain 2 perms. One was a call into a farm in Haydon Bridge! The second was beating for a commercial shoot! I lost both eventually due to a land grab "bypass" at haydon bridge. and the keeper of the shoot went bankrupt, so lost that too. I have now beat 2 seasons for.a syndicate "free" and still not got any pigeon shooting from it. I got a few days on the game shootibg though so WELL worth the work. I have been lucky enough to have a few good chaps on here offer me days out in the durham, Darlo, Stockton kind of area's. I owe those lads a great deal of gratitude! LAP, Hawkeye, Roblatch, and a few other!
Dirty Harry
Yeah ive knocked on 30 doors and sent lots of emails to stables etc. Incidentally ive found a lot if stable owners to be very anti hunting. Odd with the damage rabbit holes do to horses legs but hey hum. They are probably worried that you'll frighten the horses.
The Mighty Prawn
I went out to fillongley, shustoke, meriden, etc. Will try again tomorrow Just be aware that in my experience any of the farms within 30 mins (ish) of Brum get clattered by every gun owner in the city driving just out of town on a door knock, also Meriden etc will also get the same from the Cov massive - try further afield and you might find less hard hit farms who don't have truckloads of weekend warriors beating a path to their door. I am looking for somewhere new for next season and have heard of a shoot at Seaton deleval who don't pay but give you vermin shooting in return so I'm going to try and beat there for next season. If I can get some contact details would you like me to pass them on.

Seems a bit odd, nobody shoots over it for pigeons? I would think with 480 acres there would be a few lads beating a path to his door

Archie-fox
Oh I see! I.thought you meant nobody bothered! People are all ways asking, but when they turn up head to toe in Camo asking if there mates can come, with big 4x4s with big off road types you can imagine why they get told no... LeadWasp
get yourself some beating and go from there, the doors will open once you are known +1 for this suggestion and if you like a quiet pint in a pub get yourself into one that farmers drink in and become a regular. That's how I got my first pest perm and word of mouth from there. Networking really I suppose. Its also the psychology of the approach. Some farmers have a real bee about rats - they want them gone but everyone keeps asking about rabbits pigeons fox or corvids. Corvids on bales (pecking holes) or in the soya bins is a frequent problem. If I'm honest I often haven't asked directly but they've overheard a conversation in the pub with a mate about whopping this or that and they get thinking. I guess if you're a landowner it feels as if everyone is after something BUT if YOU come up with the idea that you need pest control it seems more palatable. It's the 'what's in it for them' perspective, it comes down to money hassle and advantage. 4 hares eat as much as one sheep...so that's probably 6-8 rabbits eat the same.
