A quieter option.

I have permission to shoot on a few fields locally that require me to use a moderated weapon to clear up the pigeons. The farmer has insisted. I have the option of buying a Mossberg moderated pump in either 12 or .410.

My question is, just how quiet are they with standard ammunition?

I have used the .410 before, but this was a while ago and I was whizzing across the stubbles on a quad at the time.

I need the weapon I choose to be quiet enough so as not to annoy the neighbours (with horses) and minimises the risk of them contacting the farmer.

Any experience with these guns using standard or subsonic shells, I would like to hear about.

If you can make the .410 work for you then its going to be much, much quieter than the 12 bore. I use Lyvale Express 2.5" 14g fibres and they are quiet. I've no experience of the 20b or 12b HP pumps but have a fully moderated Greener 12b and with subs or standard shells its much louder that the .410.

Other options are the 12b built on the OU franchi (name excaped me at the moment), the HP investarm 20 as suggested above or a HP semi auto that may or may not still cycle with standard shells.

Get the Investarm 20gauge over under and experiment with some different factory ammo to see what works best. I handload 30g of 5 @ 1050fps for an excellent pigeon load.

I have looked at the Investarm. I would consider getting one. I've seen one for sale in Suffolk. What do they handle like?

The investarm would be a much better option , the mossbergs are very unweildy IMO , I have used both and the investarm is much better to handle .

The difference in noise between standard and subsonic loads is not worth the extra expense , dont forget you are likely to hear a good bit more noise behind the gun that a few meters down range.

Most shooters who pick mine up grimace initially but the fact is if you put your front hand slightly further forwards the balance is fine. The weight of the tube, which isn't that much really, helps with considered shots but slightly stilts those snap shots you get and the barrel's not that long either, about 32". My first one was a folder but the non folder is much better. The tube can get cold in winter and they are non ejectors which doesn't bother me. Using subsonic 5 shot they kill with authority. I could manage with mine as my only gun, the bags don't suffer at all for it but I enjoy using other guns. It is indispensable though and I wouldn't dream of being without one. Finding the right ammo is the key to success.

Eley fourlong's are the quietest I've found. Quieter than the subsonics. With the mod on, all you will hear is a shushing sound as the shot pushes through the air. The only fourten cartridge I've found to be that quiet.

have you tried the hull 2.5" 11g 6s i tried lots of different rounds when i got my hushpower including eley fourlong's and found the hull quietest quieter than eley and Lyvale

It is of course the Laport Pro II built on a Fabarm action!

Thanks for all the replies. All things considered, I have opted for a .410 pump. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and giving it a trial run somewhere. It should do the job I require and if it doesn't, i'll get something else in the future. Look out for a video of me using it - my next challenge i'm setting myself is a 100+ pigeon day with it.

Despite Richard Brigham claiming otherwise I don't see the .410 husher as a contender for what you're trying to do. The 20 gauge on the other hand can match a standard shotgun.

The 20 would be a far more capable gun, but I do like a challenge. I think I could do it.

I must admit I do like the look and size of the .410 pump but having owned a pedretti single .410 husher I found it very restricted in use. The 20 is a whole new world. Maybe it's time to bring out a 28 gauge one.

I've got loads of different shells to try in it, including some 19 gram. I will find out what shells suit it/me best and i'm sure it can be a useful little tool. I know i'll have to get the pigeons in fairly close, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Not tried them Colin, or even seen them, but if they're quieter than fourlongs they really are quiet. I'll ask around for some. A bit lighter load but worth a try. Thanks.
