fern01
I have got a bakers cyst which is badly inflamed at the back of my knee and is very painful, so much that I cannot put weight on that leg and are therefore on crutches. Has anyone else had one of these and how long to clear up ? The season is only weeks away and getting worried.
fenboy
The wife has one , or did have , last time it became inflamed it became badly infected and they chopped her leg off above the knee. Only Joking , hers has never got as bad as needing crutches though it is painful when it plays up .

Harnser
I have one behind my right knee that has made my right leg bigger in circumference than my left . I have had this cyst for about 10 years and it has not caused me any problems at all and certainly no pain . My doctor has said if it dosent bother me then leave it alone . It can be drained , but not the best option as it is most likely to come back after a certain period of time . The best option is an op to remove it . halight
My mum has one. They not a very nice thing to have. They come and can go for no fee at all. My mum's came about two years ago. She suffered with it for about 8 months. They it eased off , three months ago for no revision it started to swell up again. They can be very painful and make daily life hard. She finds putting something cold on her knee helps. My mum also has arthritis in the same knee when the backers swells up it makes the arthritis worse too. My mum's doctor has stood her that there is very little that can be done for them. My.mum has injections in her knees for the arthritis and she also finds this dose help a little with the backers. No one in the faintly had heard of backers before my mum developed one. But they are very common according to her doctor. Her doctor has told her that some people get one and they suffer for awhile with it and then it goes away and never comes back. Others stuffed on and off with them for years and then it goes and never returns. Then others still once they get one will suffer with them for the rest of there life. Hope you get some relief from your soon mate

STOTTO
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bakers-cyst/Pages/Introduction.aspx I had never heard of this before but found this online, if you try the ice pack method to try to reduce the swelling first wet the suggested tea-towel, you will get much better thermal transfer with the ice pack. Good luck.

Good luck. The wife wouldn't allow me a pack of frozen peas out of the freezer, said she would not eat something that has been resting on my leg...... However I did manage to rummage about a bit and find a brace of last years frozen partridge which, wrapped in a wet tea towel as suggested have helped a bit. Ice cubes crushed and put into a wet tea towel is most effective, greater surface area.
fern01
Went to the hospital today, had X-rays done on the knee, an injection in the knee and some of the clear fluid drained off. Gone from crutches to a walking stick in one day. A big thank you to my GP and the hospital. Well done the NHS Edited August 21, 2014 by fern01
