ditchman
Well after my look see and a few bangs yesterday, when i saw and set up the wrong side of the field, only to watch 20,000 fly by....i went up the field again at 12.45....had a chinwag with the farmer who was setting up the GPS package on the sprayer with my mate...and he moved off to download the points on the farm map....then i set up 200 yds off the jacobian hse wind coming on to my right cheek ,under a large oak. No dogs with me, ...peace and quiet, ...i had my 26" No 4 that had the chokes bored out to just tighter than cylinder & 1/4, and was itching to try it....emptied 2 boxes of lyvadale express 21/2" 28gm into my cartridge bag that already had 15 or so in it....rolled a fag...leaned back in the chair, and thought what a loverly day.....i could hear someone strimming like a demented bee in the distance , but that was all apart from intermittent sun and a stiff breeze coming on my right cheek............then things started to move.......... 4 birds at 10 clock coming straight to me at 70 ft...bang miss bang hit...eject...15 at 10clock 70 - 100ft...bang miss bang miss.....not good...moved the chair out of the way and upped the hide poles to nose hieght...filled my pockets and stood up.. more coming in 2 low and left to right bang miss bang hit....suddenly relised i was giving far too much lead another bunch coming in...one splits off to the left and at 120ft back trigger bang wings fold puff of white bird is stoned ..spin to the right and sweep thro at more of them bang...puff of feathers...birds are starting to coming in a steady stream and at 100-150ft...choke bang feathers ...down...,lower one whip the gun thro bang...plucked it clean....barrels starting to get hot...and put my barrell glove on................this went on from just after 1 o'clock...to 3.30....then the "tap " turned off i was out of breath and my heart was pumping it all happened in spurts....good quiet then off it would go again........ 3.45 it had finished.....the gun did good so i took it with me and tore of back home to get the dogs ...as birds were all over the shop..... when i had picked up i was just pulling out of the field and my mate pulled onto the field to have a jaw..."we heard you shooting " he says...told him i had picked 49 for nearly 70 shots.....he said the incomers at the jacobian hse rang up to complain about the "bird scarer"...the farmers wife said "if you dont like then bloody move"...and she put the phone down.........she's a rum girl boy !!!! so no big numbers but fast and furious better than any game shoot day...and for once this moaning ole *** is a happy bunny....only down side is ive got to dress them on monday.........no pain no gain.. JDog
That is a great afternoon in anyone's books. I presume that the 20,000 just passed through and those birds were either residents or newcomers to the area but intent on feeding. What was the crop? HIDENSEEK
Sounds like a cracking day! It's nice when it goes right for a change. You may have prompted me to get the mothballs off my No 4 & get it bored out, full & half at the moment, which is too tight (for me). ditchman
JDOG..........looks like half of them were feeding on stubbles...and the other half all the crops were empty...............not a big miration this time...proberly 3500-4000 ...not like yesterday........im going to watch tomorrow...then have a go with my mate on monday...........they were all going the same way.........due south HIDESEEK...........do it.......mine was bored like that ...had to "aim" it like a rifle....i shoot hard an fast with both eyes open...so just tighter than a cylinder and a 1/4 works well for me.........ive used that config' for 45 years now...... see pic next post...........
