TACDAVE
All I have recently got back into shotgunning after a break of several years , I shoot both clays and rough / pigeons. Just by looking on the net there appears to be a whole host of various cartridge manufactures offering shells at differing prices. My question is what is the difference between a budget cartridge and a premium cartridge which has the same load and shot size? Generally see a price swing of £30 for 250. Are there any distinct advantages in purchasing the more expensive cartridge?
dougall
not alot of difference..you will by trial and error find ones you like, when you do just stick to 'em.Budget clay shells break most clays fine...I think at the margin as well as psychologically top shells have a tiny edge.......... BrowningDJC
Its what you have confidence in, i dont care what i use for clays although i like to have a cartridge i feel confident with for game.
Guest cookoff013
i feel there is a big difference..... take lylevale world cup. i sheer raw energy shell, tighter specs as in shotsize regulation, faster speeds, generally a premium shell. then take lylvale HV 28g shells, hardly a professional competition shell, it bangs, stuff goes out the barrel... evo
if your shooting pigeons, just buy whatever is cheapest, they all go bang and if the bird is in the pattern and you put the shot in the right place then the bird will not survive, I love using 7 1/2 clay carts on the pigeons and at £150/1000 who can complain, I,m now using Proper Carts( that's the make) in 4.5 and 5.5 32g for longer shots and at 189/1000 they are the best value cart out there, simple answer use what is the cheapest you can afford Edited February 9, 2015 by evo

Buy what you can afford. Value for money and cheap are 2different tings.
johnnytheboy
I would agree with the above! Rio Royal are cheaper but far better than RC Sipe and Gamebore Black Gold, but due to clever marketing and expensive packaging most folk are lured into thinking the two later are the best money can buy. The reality it's is if you open a Black Gold it has the same wad as there budget clear pigeon! Mentioned above are the proper cartridges, great value for money and I really like their hi speeds, if you check my velocity test they are up there with some well known expensive cartridges. Westley
This topic has been done to death on a clayshooting site. After 8 pages they have still not arrived at a positive conclusion !
Gordon R
Pick the cheapest - it will be better than your shooting.
wymberley
Any one where the shot is actually the size you wanted, is well shaped and consistent in size. You don't always have to pay through the nose to get that.
