andypaint
Probably injector drip, filthy egr valve,or a glowplug not working, put a load of injector cleaner in and see if it helps clean injectors and egr. Just noticed it's a 2003, so possibly no egr, so either injector drip of glowplug problem, put some decent injector cleaner in and see if it helps. oliver90owner
More likely lack of turbo boost - loads of fuel injected but not enough induction air to burn it properly. Could be turbo or a leak between turbo and engine or might be a constriction in front of the turbo (collapsed ducting). Need more info such as real power available, etc, etc. Lesser possibility is head gasket gone between two cylinders. Just general comments as I've no experience of that particular engine. It was the turbo bearings that Had given up, mercedes wanted £1500 supply only but I got a recon from somewhere else for about £

dhumble5
An update. Believe it or not the smoke was because the exhaust clamp snaped off were the front and back box joined together. The ratlling was the clamp on the exhaust.Cheaper repair than turbo etc. £7 for new clamp. it I was grey smoke not black Edited March 29, 2015 by dhumble5
