Suntan Day on Drilled Beans

post-305-0-23278800-1428264498_thumb.jpgI had planned to shoot a wheat field that had a decent number of birds feeding on weeds within the crop. However a bean field had been drilled for over a week, with quite a bit of spill and hadn't shown any pigeons but I decided to check it out before I set up on the wheat. I was met by over 400 birds feeding hard with 2 distinct lines joining them. So I changed plan there and then! It is a huge L shape field and I set up on the point that gave me command of the 2 lines, which unfortunately also looked straight into the surprisingly hot sun. I had 3 dead birds and 12 plastics, with a turbo flapper on from the start. There was hardly a breath of wind and the birds came from a great height. I replaced the plastics with shot birds and they decoyed brilliantly, dropping almost vertically into the pattern. I had some thrilling shooting at birds that seemed as if they were dropping right into the hide. Shot first bird at 1300 and last one at 1745. Picked 92 for a brilliant days shooting. I'd probably have shot more with a decent breeze but the variety of shots I had more than made up for that. One very tired dog and I have got the after sun on in copious quantities!

Sounds like a good day.

Where abouts in Northumberland?

I was out myself near Morpeth the other day. Lots of pigeons but staying in big flocks still and not yet breaking up.

Had a decent day but the weather wasnt great for it.

North of Alnwick on a farm where I help keeper. The birds are just starting to break up into manageable groups. It was a poor shooting day but I think the birds were just hooked on the field and I was lucky enough to shoot at the right time.

Well done on a good bag, but why do you say it was a poor shooting day? The result suggests otherwise.

Poor in that I normally prefer a decent breeze. There really wasn't a breath of wind. I know the results contradict that but I think if there had been some wind I would have shot more. Not wishing to sound ungrateful of course, it was great to have a "proper" day when the birds threw themselves into the pattern like stukas!
