Desired_affect
right my next question is could i use steel shot in it? or if not what could i use other than lead. i know the 12-70 is the bore and cartridge size
wymberley
You can use anything marked 12-70 on the box. Whether or not you use steel (HP steel is a no no) is entirely up to you and you might like to check your chokes.
Gunman
Date will be best determined by the proof stamp which I can see the letter "N". If it followed by a 2 its 1995 if its a 1 its1968 . No 29xxxx should put it in the 1966/1971 era so that would come in line with an "N1" proof date stamp . As the gun appears to be a non ejector are you sure its a NO4 and not a No3 or Yeoman? Edited April 20, 2015 by Gunman
Desired_affect
Fairly sure it's a number 4 And it does say N*

mickyh
In the 70's I sold these guns. The No.4 was an ejector. The No.3 was a non-ejector. The Yoeman sas non ejector, but with no engraving whatsoever.

Welsh grouse
I contacted a.y.a.regarding my sxs a.y.a.the gun number starts 16xxxx and the only information they gave me was made in 1963 and the model is 400 e./my shotgun is a 12bore witch has 28inch barrels, ejectors, straight hand stock with brass oval inlay, double triggers,on the action I have 2screws and 2 pins but no locking screws, on the action there is some engraving exactly like the picture of your gun,on the front lump there is a extractor retaining pin/screw.i have been informed by my local gun shop/dealer that my gun is not a a.y.a no4 because it has not got locking screws on the action,(that is the only difference between my shotgun and a proper a.y.a no 4) and should Not be sold as a no 4.hope this information helps you out. I think it would pay you to e.mail a.y.a to find out what they say, they replied back to me within a hour, hope this info helps you.WELSH GROUSE. Gunman
It must be born in mind that models have changed over the years and guns of the early 60's that became the guns we know today can not be truly described in the current models terms . AyA have produced a wide range of models such as the No3 ejector which was essentially a No4 but without the action screws and locking pins . They also made guns for export to other countries , never intended for the UK market that for one reason or another ended up here .The 177 side lock being an example .
