m3vert
Ok folks I am no expert on what's needed and what isn't on a TV! We currently have a 40"LED Sony Bravia, but I am after something bigger! Looking for 55" ideally as low profile as possible. I have no idea where is best place to buy or to avoid, so open to suggestions? I have bought from John Lewis in the past to get the 5 year warranty. I spotted this LG on Costco site and it seems great value for money but maybe its because its rubbish?? Any experts out there that can advise? Thanks in advance. http://www.costco.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/cos_1,cos_1.1,cos_1.1.6/167219

loriusgarrulus
Always been pleased with Panasonics. Bit pricey but last well.
Rupert
My main criteria now are, can I read the guide at the viewing distance and can I use the remote easily with one hand. All the majors seem to be much of a muchness. Edited April 18, 2015 by Rupert
m3vert
Don't want 4k and don't like curved, other than that?? Don't need Smart TV and not fussed about 3D so I guess I just want a 55" HD tv to watch er the TV on :-)
Medic1281
As said Panasonic do some very good screens. The fact that you want a "dumb" TV should mean you have more money to spend on a top quality screen.
jimmydean
I have a panasonic 52" and its a bit too large for the house that we are in at the moment - are you sure 54" is not too large? That said, we have a smaller 24" smart tv and its excellent Samsung - in the next house I think I will go for a 30-40" Good hunting.
Medic1281
General rule of thumb is, measure the height of the TV and sit 5 times that measurement away from the screen.
jimmydean
General rule of thumb is, measure the height of the TV and sit 5 times that measurement away from the screen. It worked in the last house and since it cost £1500 (much cheaper now) of a tax rebate, I will watch it even if I have to sit on it ! Will use your formula to check in the next house - thanks. Any set from LG, Pana.Sony or Samsung should be fine. Toshiba are also a possibility but not sure if they are made under licence these days. grrclark
Keg, about 80% of Toshiba telly's are made by Vestel in Turkey.
keg
I thougt as much but wasn't sure, my old MD is now Head of their licensing side. They are huge. Own the Sharp brand now as well.
grrclark
Head of Vestel licensing or Tosh? I did a couple of really interesting things with Tosh, but don't think it's seen the light of day yet, if it ever does. They are massive and really impressive in many respects and absolutely hopeless in others
shoot and be safe
Have a look in Tesco, Asda or any of the big supermarkets. They have some great prices and choice. I bought a 50"+ before Christmas for less than £400 and I am chuffed with it (apart from it being to big for the room ). The only downside is the wall brackets cost a bloody fortune. £
lexikia
Curry's are competitive. Nice to get the 5 year warranty from Lewis's but you pay for it. Most TV's should last at least 5 years I have a 60" Samsung Plasma on the wall in not such a large room, but doesn't look out of place being on the wall. Picture is excellent with plasma, but sound not so good so I have an AV amp and 5.1 speakers. Also have LG and Panasonic in different rooms both 42" and both good pics. Not much in them now days. Dominicrobed
We use LG tv's and never had a problem with them. Don't think we would buy another make now. We used to buy Sony but we were not very impressed with the last one we bought.

Loki
Hi What TV & HiFi magazine (pretty sure on Internet too) does tests on various equipment and provides a summarised star rated view at the back - should be helpful to have this background/starting information to narrow down the sets in the size you are considering. aris
I'd pay a bit more for a 5 year guarantee. My current set needed it several times. Costco are good for this too - 5 years on all TV's. This one may suit you: http://www.costco.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/cos_1,cos_1.1,cos_1.1.7/187079
m3vert
Thing is Aris if it had been a 96" I would have taken that one, but I don't have the room for the 98" sadly ;-)
