sen
I wandered over one evening to see what they were doing and they were talking to truckers in the US. Apparently, this only occurred in certain weather conditions, but I could hear them loud and clear. Sometimes they can only hear them, but that evening they were talking to them. The phenomena is called skywave propagation, commonly known to CB'ers as "skip". Without going into it, it is certain conditions in the ionosphere at certain times in the lunar cycle. The waves are effectively "bounced" between two layers within the ionosphere and much longer range communication is possible. Users with more powerful transmitters would more readily be heard but a 4watt CB would need just the right conditions in order to reach those distances. I have talked to people in Italy with a standard 4watt rig, the practice of seeking long range communication is known as DX'ing smart ****

wickedandlazee
I've just bought a CB too after about 20 years being off it Put it in my hilux. Went on 19 and nothing had changes theres was some **** playing music and another trying to flog a pair of hedge trimmers. Nowhere as good as it used to be - hardly anyone on, they don't speak the lingo anymore either. Also everyone seems to hgo channel 19 chatting away as though it wasna a breaking channel - I upset a few by telling em there was another 38 flaming channels they could chat on Seemed to be full of chavs who can't afford phone lines too Still there were one or two on from the old days and you still get a few truckers on so it can be useful if travelling. I am getting back into it slowly. (oh for the dizzy days of the 80s when you couldn't find a free channel some days ) My handle used to be speed merchant - now its rabbit slayer
scaffman73
NO WAY! Would this have been around 1991-94? That was around that time. Before the police and councils shut off all the carparks. ST.Marys light house to Sunderland , then up and down the beehive road to Hollywell. You don't get nothing like that these days.

LEFTY478
Had a President Grant rig with upper & lower, plus two sidebands- 480 channels!, 2kw amp and a 18foot Di-pole on the roof of the flat. Use to drown out most of Hounslow! Upset the local FBI (Friendly Breakers Inc) especially when I played Derek & Clive's 'Got the horn' on chan 14 for four hours. Those were the days. Suffolk shooter
I have four sets ranging from your basic 40 channel FM set to one that has FM, AM upper sideband, upper upper sideband, Lower Sideband and Lower Lower Sideband. My Handle was Raider and we used to have a good laugh round our way,, meeting up with various people at Pubs, Laybys. I had good chats with Guys in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Algeria, Ireland, Wales all from Suffolk. The Skip factor was always best on those Hot Summer, CLear Sky evenings. Used to Park up at Felixstowe because the Sea acted just like a large Mirror bouncing the Signal from the Ionosphere. I had a set of 50 amp "boots" in the car and used to anoy the hell out of the little ***** that used to think they were hard, when you parked up outside their house and bled all over they conversations all the way round the 40 channels. Mungler, had a similar experience with my "Home Base" rig, when I had a 21 foot Silver Pole Aerial and knocked off TV's in the surrounding area. Good Days, What's ya 20 good buddy, come on.......... Suffolk shooter
we used to have a good laugh round our way,, meeting up with various people at Pubs, Laybys. Isn't that called "Dogging" nowadays? In them days that didn't happen round our way, however there was a famous case somewhere on the Suffolk/Norfolk border involving gays. I believe there were murders at the same time. Now days the local beauty() spots has been closed down, due to all the doggers. Have to say though that I did end up having one or two dalliances with some of the girls I met on the airwaves. SS
