Zetter
Hi All I have until recently only owned air rifles, shotguns and a .22lr so the cleaning regime has been pretty simple. However I have now got a .17HMR and wondered what is the best way to give it a decent clean every few hundred rounds and if I am doing it right? For my first go I have a one piece tetragun coated rod with a .17HMR jag and bronze brush. What I did was run a wet patch down with hopes number 9 solvent and let it sit for 10 mins. Then I ran the bronze brush down a couple of times to get out any hard ****. Finally I ran dry patches through until they came out clean. All the stuff through the bore went through from breach to muzzle and only one way. I don't have a boreguide as I cant find one for my HW60 but was careful when running the rod through. Is this ok or does anyone have any other tips they can give me on a cleaning regime? Cheers Neil
walshie
I haven't got an HMR but that's exactly how I clean my centrefires. (Occasionally.)
LeadWasp
Hi Neil. I clean my 17 more often that that. I boresnake it every dozen or so shots and carry one in the field. There's some discussion as to frequent cleaning reducing fliers. I give it a full clean every 50 or so and additionally if it's not going to be used for a while or if the weather is damp etc. I try not to over brush it. Oh and I applaud your choice in rifle - Weihrauch...nice... I have a 66J. McCavoy's will do you a 17 bore guide and poss Riflecraft too. If you want spare mags try Riflemags.co.uk - great service! Don't let the Hornady horror stories put you off the HMR. I would recommend Federal V Shok in 17gr or the new Winchester stuff, but of course each gun to it's own. spready
Sorry to hijack the thread, but i clean my HW66j .17hmr quiet regularly, but always find it takes about 5 or so shorts to get back onto my zero, which isn't ideal for heading out in the field, any way to over come this, other than the obvious lol

I haven't done it myself yet
crowdie2013
I boresnaked my CZ every 50 or so and find it needs to be re-zeroed after a clean. Just bought a rodding kit etc but not used as yet. Had the gun 12 months from new and only had about 250 rounds through it. Fantastic wee gun and cant see me ever parting with it. Ive been told by a few guys on my shoot that I shouldn't be cleaning it and just leave it fouled so who knows whats best?!

Savhmr
Personally I would avoid boresnakes for a 17hmr. I know they have their fans but the bronze bristles, it has been reported, can be drawn through to mark the crown which can affect accuracy plus my local RFD reports that he regularly gets in customers with snapped boresnakes requiring removal by his gunsmith. As to the cleaning, your regime sounds spot on only I clean mine a little more often, perhaps every 50 to 100 rounds to avoid over-fouling especially of the breach area. I carry a small nylon brush in the field which is used on zeroing days to clean the breach every 25 or so rounds in addition to the 50-100 round cleaning. The 22LR gets the rifling cleaned once every 250 rounds or so, but again, the breach is regularly cleaned. Just avoid pushing a bronze brush all the way through if you use one. Like you, I dont always use a boreguide, and its not an issue as long as care is used guiding the rod through.

Savhmr
Nope, I'm not saying that Badly worded. The bronze brush doesn't get anywhere near the crown.
browning123
I use a Gun Mouse Bore Cleaner to clean my 17hmr, I sent for it from the USA. Similar to a bore snake but better made:- The most effective cleaning product for your .17hmr & other calibres. Easy to use. Abrasive Nylon brush bore cleaner. It's a nylon scrubber or scrubbie for your gun plus it captures and holds loose debris and fouling without scratching the inside of your gun. More manufacturers today are moving from the Brass brushes to Nylon brushes. You can use any cleaner, solvent, or oil with great results. They also clean up with hot water and Fairy dish soap. For a really dirty cleaner.. use odorless mineral spirits. Edited August 10, 2015 by browning123
Savhmr
Can I ask which company you used? That seems to be a safer bet than a boresnake.

Savhmr
Just tried them but no UK shipping offered so have emailed them. Thanks for the confirmation though.
browning123
Yes, I also had to email them and they got me a very reasonable quote to ship to the U.K. Once I paid with paypal they took seven days to arrive.

Dougy
Do men push a dry patch through if only even one shot is fired and it ware's a can before putting away! I never dry patch, the build up of crud in front of the patch can restrict the bore size, and excess force is needed to push the patch through. That's my thery anyway. Mods are always removed. Dougy
I like it tight, cant see the point in a sloppy patch, its for removing crud not giving it a tickle ;-)

I very rarely put my guns away without them having some attention with a rod some bore foam and a patch, unless its a late night. Then it's first job in the morning.
