robbiep
BMW - but ONLY if SE, Comfort or Lux, and not 'MSport' spec. Fantastically comfortable, and great in either manual or automatic. The 8 speed auto is extraordinary.
chady
No it would be the se. The bmw I'm looking at is the manual 6 speed. I would sooner have an auto though as I'm lazy. To be honest

cromwell7
I've driven a 2011 e250 estate. Had it as a hire car for a few days really nice to drive had the column gear selector which was a bit strange at first but a really nice car to drive long distance. spanj
i had 3 sets of injector seals on my 2011 e350 if thats any help, other than that it was a decent motor although not as well finished as previous mercs but I suppose you could say that about most brands now
Woodbepigeonshooter
Of the current 5 series I have had a saloon and tourer in SE both manual. Great car economical and low tax as a company car but just great to drive. Car feels like it is wrapped around the driver. The SE is good value spec with leather and climate next levels see not worth it. Currently I have the m sport 5 series in auto ( week 4 and 4000miles so far) who said a company car is a perk! Auto is the game changer for the good and even in comfort mode the m sport with 19" alloys is a harder ride than the SE
Twistedsanity
It depends on the image you want to project, the BMW badge screams "sales-rep" all over whereas the Mercedes says "I own the company the BMW driver works for"
Milo
Wait and see if either or both these companies have been using the VW emissions con!

Vince Green
I've always had Mercs so im biased. I live in North London so I'm not going to be driving a BMW, they have an 'image problem' which is a shame because they are probably the better car. If buying the E buy a 350 rather than the smaller engined cars. Fantastic deals on Mercedes Approved cars at the moment because there are a lot of really low mileage ex lease cars coming out of their lease scheme . They had a really big push on leasing a few years ago and those cars have flooded the approved market. Convertable Es are actually cheaper than saloons secondhand for the first time ever. chrisjh
i have had both in the last few years and Audi A6 all good cars now drive a Lexus just as good and a lot better for tax, Mercedes have a serious issue with image they have become the "Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton, Blackburn" low level drug dealer vehicle of choice, inevitably a CLK or AMG complete with a couple of naive young white girls sat in the back. chady
I know what your saying. Surprised me about north London vince. I probably would have thought it was the other way round. I was thinking the bmw to tone the looks down. But there all cheap now 11 plates 20-30 thousand £15000

Savhmr
5 Series for me, but depends on age. We've had both, and merc was the better screwed together car BUT it was an older model (2005). I wouldn't touch a newer merc with a bargepole. Quality has suffered a lot and reliability, especially on some of the E class engines, is shocking (avoid 2.8 and some 3.5 petrols for example). Beemer petrols seem to be the better more reliable units. For all that, we replaced our last merc with a lexus GS petrol. Better built than either merc or bmw in our opinion, a nicer drive, better equipped and surprisingly economical for the size. Wouldn't touch another BMW or Merc after switching to Lexus. It just seems a better car all round. The only models I'd avoid like the plague are the IS range and the diesels as Lexus dont seem to know how to put together a decent and reliable diesel motor yet. It was a Lexus main dealer mechanic who told me that they were some of the worst about and to avoid them. The 3 litre V6 petrol and 4.3 V8 are a different matter....possibly two of the most reliable, smoothest powerplants ever made. Their newer GS hybrids are outside of our price bracket but seem a real world alternative to the newer E class/S class and 5 series. Fast too. chady
Thanks, your not the only person to mention the Lexus!! I'll have a look at them too! But might have a problem as my mileage is going to be the other side of 15,000 a year!! I can't afford a new one to looking at 11/12 plates! So need a diesel

So need a diesel I was tempted to a 5 series, but even the more comfy se (rather than the firmer sprung models) couldn't hold a candle to the lexus for comfort. It is without doubt the most comfortable thing I've ever sat in and perfect for mile munching. If you considered a few years older than the 10/11 plate then it opens up a wide choice for you in GS300/430/460 models, all of which will happily deliver 300K plus miles, and plenty of low miles examples. Lexus warrant all main body panels for 10 years and if any corrosion appears, will replace the affected panel free of charge. Interiors are up with the very best and they come with all the gadgets as standard. The GS models are all brisk. Even the 3.0 V6 will manage the 0-60 sprint in about 7 seconds, and the 430/460 are sub 6 seconds. The icing on the cake for me was the excellence of service from Lexus main dealers. I usually avoid main dealerships like the plague, but lexus proved to be an exception. Their standards of service are second to none and for years running they have been right at the top of most customer satisfaction surveys. Many I speak with who have been converted from the usual brand suspects say the same thing...they'll not go back after driving a Lexus and after receiving such top service. Can't recommend them highly enough. Older models tend, by and large, to be very very well screwed together. Just avoid entry level models, the IS range and anything with a diesel engine in it. My 300 SE returns 35-37mpg on motorway runs which for a large petrol lump is pretty good. I average 28mpg, shortish trips included, and load space is massive. The boot is cavernous. Handling is excellent for such a large car. Not perhaps as nimble as a 5 series M sport, but on a par with the 5 series se but that's not what these are all about. They offer reliability, longevity, total comfort and comparatively low whole life running costs along with very respectable performance and comfort. I'm lucky to have a job that gives me a car allowance and belong as its respective and reliable I have no restrictions! You're torn between a 5 series and an E class? Life has been cruel to you... Savhmr
Thanks for your help I'm going to look into it. I know a bought the service is next to none!! But I can't afford main dealer prices so that will have to take the hit! Otherwise I would. Thanks though Not as steep as you might think...you could be surprised. I asked my local independent garage (who have always been spot on with us) what they'd charge for 3 year's servicing for the GS300. They reckoned on around £1250 - £1400 for the 3 services, parts and labour. Lexus did me a 3 year all inclusive plan for less than that. I think it was around £1100. Considering that their work is fully warranted and the standard of their service, it was a no brainer. When we had the beemer, and asked the same question, the main dealership was almost twice the price of the same local garage! Point is, running costs with Lexus appear considerably lower than for BMW.
chady
Thanks all, Had a quick look at the Lexus but the wife didn't really like them and I was a bit unsure, My heart was set on BMW or Mercedes, probably more Mercedes but the wife preferred BMW's. So I found and bought a nice 520D SE Hope img to pick it up st the weekend but might have to be in a couple of weeks. As I'm on holiday for 8 days from next Thursday!! So it's a tight schedule lol Thanks all, think I made the right decision lol
