powler
Hi chaps, I have the chance of a 2005 Discovery 3 TD V6 S, it has a good MOT record with a advisory for a perished rubber on the propshaft bearing, the truck does have high mileage of 140k. Everything else appears to be in good order but I have only seen photos so far, hopefully I can get off work early this afternoon to go and have a butchers. Anyways what do you guys think of the disco 3, are they any good, anything I should pay extra attention to when viewing? Thanks very much Mick
Cosd
Would be a good idea to get yourself on a forum for Disco 3's where they will have much more widespread experience for the cars and any ailments. I personally don't know too much about the 3, but Land Rovers tend to get a bit of a bashing on here......
R1nut
They are fantastic when going ok but when the trouble starts that's when deep pockets are needed!!!! It's a 50k car at a fraction of the price still with 50k car repair bill!!! Take someone that knows them or as Cosd says get on the forum. My step dad has one as does a good friend so I could bore you for hours!!! They are great to drive, really nice place to be on a journey and pretty handy off road. I couldn't justify the running costs so bought a defender instead, in 12 months not a lot of problems which surprised me, the same can't be said for the discos!! SirDread
I have considered a 3 numerous times but after a poor relationship with a 2 I am massively cautious about anything with a green badge. They are great cars and extremely capable. I have a 2005 landcruiser now instead which does not give me the same fuzzy feeling as a landrover does. It wallows a lot more on road, it is better spec'd out and a stronger and more reliable engine, though slightly slower, equally as capable but it just doesn't look as nice in my opinion. Already said but the DISCO 3 forum is a great source of info on them. There is unfortunately a lot of nightmare tales on there and there has been a lot of faults with them. It is enough to put me off a Disco 3 but I am considering a Disco 4 next year when I change as they have a better engine and all the faults from the 3's sorted. If you buy one definitely hold some money back for early ownership repairs
powler
Spoke to 4x4 garage in the next town, the boss recommended not getting a discovery 3 but the earlier model if I wanted to get Land Rover. As you guys say he said the cost of maintaining a disco 3 is very expensive. Thanks for the input guys. Mick
walshie
They seem to have the Disco 4 sorted (as far a LR goes) but I've never heard anything good about a 3. A 2005 would be one of the first too.

Going to look out for a earlier disco, but no rush, quite enjoying the window shopping atm. Thanks Mick

That's in less than a year of owning . But it is very good at doing everything I need plus I new the history of the van from day one still didn't stop the problems. It's a 2010 done 100k and had 4 clutches ... Jay Edited January 20, 2016 by jay404
Royboy
I work on them and think there awful, clutches, wheel bearings, electronic handbrakes ! There just a few ! Discovery 1 and 2s are such a better truck and easier to work on, 3s are money Pitts ! Avoid
stuart21
I sold my Disco 3 18 months ago, and I loved it. I think landrovers are the best driving 4x4's there are and the disco is more than capable off road. I had a 54 plate, bought it with 60k and sold it with 105k on the clock. I used a local garage and so service and repair bills were reasonable and not at all high, considering the cost of the car. I had the egr valves replaced under warranty and the air conditioning was failing towards the end, but no other issues. I sold it to buy a RangeRover and love that as well. Thanks very much Mick Personally, I bought the latest, lowest mileage 04 plate disco 2 I could find. Its proven to be a good decision. I love my lannys and would always buy the last model year of the outgoing model over the first model year of a new one ..........
