WinchesterDave
With the possibility of swapping one of my 12s in the coming month or so for a 20b, and having never had a 20 before I've been looking into some cartridges. Currently I use GB clear pigeon 32g 6 fibre. I personally consider this to be a good, all round, hard hitting affordable cartridge. I've shot pheasant, partridge, fox, pigeons, rabbits , magpies etc and have had good results for a good price, hence me personally considering it an all round cart. My question is, is there an equivalent 20b load? What sort of prices etc? I keep stumbling across RC sipe? I think a 28g load would be my personal preference to start off with for live quarry. Cheers in advance, Dave
ChrisPCarter
I've just got a Miroku MK60 20 bore recently and been experimenting with quite a few different cartridges. I also like the clear pigeon 32g in my 12 but it's too much in a 20. I've found the 24g to 26g ones much nicer to shoot than 28g and above. The 30g ones in particular have a real kick to them in the lighter gun so I haven't even tried the 32g to 34g ones I've seen available as I think they will only be bearable for the odd very high pheasant. You'll be paying around a tenner a box for 32g cartridges too. These are all good, in no order: RC Sipe 26g, 28g - 32g available in plastic. Very fast and hard hitting. Eley VIP 28g, 30g - 32g available. Another very fast one and probably the best option if you need 32g fibre. Hull High Pheasant 25g Lovely smooth cartridge. Hull High Pheasant Extreme 28g, 30g - Continental Shot Sizes 5 & 6 so UK 4.5 and 5.5 Gamebore Traditional Game 24g, 28g - A nice softer cartridge Gamebore Pure Gold 28g, 30g - Very nice fast cartridge with diamond shot

ChrisPCarter
How fast exactly are all those shells you mentioned? The RC Sipe and Eley VIP are meant to be 1450 to 1500fps I think. They certainly kick in the bigger sizes. The Sipe seem to be the number one 20 selling gauge from what I've read and I do like them as they are fast and good value too. ChrisPCarter
Chris, thank you for that reply it's exactly what I was after! What sort of prices are we looking at (about) for a slab of 24-28g ? You'll be looking at about £60 to £65 a slab for the cheapest 24-25 gram ones and about £75 to £85 for 28-30g ones. There don't seem to be any low quality cartridges in 20 gauge though. I think as the production runs are smaller they justify the price by keeping the quality components in there and targeting "proper" game shooters. Gamebore do Black Gold Game in 34 gram 4.5 1450fps which would probably knock your shoulder out! £95 a slab or £335 per 1000 at Just Cartridges! The options are a lot more limited in 20 bore but now I've tried a lot I won't be bothering with the 30g plus ones unless I went on a "high bird" shoot - which I probably would never do. It's pointless putting 12 bore loads through a 20 bore gun as I've heard other people say, but I had to try it myself! I do feel like I'm missing out on a lot of shot with smaller cartridges but you really are more comfortable just using the 12 bore if you need a heavy cartridge and they are so much more expensive it doesn't make any sense, just to carry a gun thats a pound or two lighter. My MK60 isn't a particularly light 20 bore either so it must be even worse with some very light guns. Having said all that I don't shoot a lot of them so it isn't much of a problem - It's rare I use more than half a box when I take my 20 gauge out as I have a 12 gauge O/U and a semi auto for pigeon blasting. I take mine out for a walk about rough shooting looking for pigeons and crows quite regularly or decoying and it's nice to have a lighter gun but if a lot of pigeons came in I'd probably switch to my 12 bore to keep the cartridge cost down. ChrisPCarter
I keep stumbling across RC sipe? I think a 28g load would be my personal preference to start off with for live quarry. Cheers in advance, Dave 28g No 5 seems to be the "classic" 20 bore load from everything I've read when I was researching getting a 20. RC Sipe seem to be very highly regarded on all the big shoots, not that I have ever done it but I've read a lot of articles in which they are recommended. They are nice quality and a good price. The first cartridges I bought to try (and keep going back to) are Sipe 26g 6's and 28g 5's. I only shoot fibre now.

ChrisPCarter
I doubt they are anywhere near that fast. RC are known for fast cartridges and according to the speed tests of their other cartridges on here, these must be 1300fps plus. They certainly have more recoil than others I've tried and the same with the Eley VIP's. I'd send some in for Johnny to test but they are all fibre wad and he can't do them. WinchesterDave
All, Thank you kindly for all your replies it's really helped me have a great insight to 20 bore loads etc, greatly appreciated George, what a smashing offer that is! I currently don't have my 20 bore as of yet possibly in the next month or so though mate. Thank you! David
Guest cookoff013
for £65-85 a slab i`d cut my losses and reload. £65 a slab is £260/k. most 12 gauge loads revolve around the £180-220 (32g load / 1200fps). 20 gauge should be cheaper still (24g)! £35 cheaper at least ! casts_by_fly
Dave, Once you get the gun, grab a slab of George's 28g 6's. That's all I have used in the 20 over the past 2 years and they are very good. They are somewhere between 50-60 a slab (can't recall exactly) and are super smooth to shoot in a light 20 (my beretta is 6lb on the nose). thanks rick
escortmagnum999
Rc sipes are the best shells Iv tried in my 20 bore, nothing else seems to hit as hard, the 28grm 5s are very potent at range!! The down side is they're pretty bumpy, but as long big as you're not shooting 100s in a short time it shouldn't be a problem.
dougall
sipes/vip/hull high pheasant all good...25g no6 hull h/p all you ever need super smooth/gentle kill any reasonable target...only 20g cartridge I found recoil noticeably up was blackgolds...great shell but totally over the top load and price wise. forget about 'speed' total red herring any of those mentioned kill stuff properly thats all thats required.
